Kicker Box

I have a Sound Designs Kicker Box that is designed to fit in the rear well of a Camaro/Firebird. It has a 10" sub on the bottom,2-5" midranges in the front of it, and has 2 rectangular cones in the front next to the 5 inchers. I know this is 1985 technology but I was wondering if I could use the box as it fits out of the way in the car and what speakers I could mount in it for some decent sound. Not trying to spend a ton of money but willing to use good quality stuff. Need you stereo guru's opinions. Thanks, Badman

and that fits in the trunk well?
i don't know about those rectangular cone speakers but i would replace the rest with some pioneer speakers. or if you're looking for cheap just go to your nearest audio shop and buy the most inexpensive speakers they have.

It sits at an angle with the front pointing toward the front of the car. Badman

it's a Kicker II. It has two 2x6 horns, and two 6.5" subs up front with a 10" passive radiator on the bottom. not actually a sub, just a passive.

ok simple enuff i think i'd stick some 6x9's in the horns spots and isolate em if they aren;t already.(just insert and screw in sections of wood to make them have chambers in the box.)and try ta trim out the 6.5" spots for some 10's or so and insert them and maybe add an amp of some sort to drive the subs i add.

I'de leave it just the way it is and play it, if it breaks keep it as memorabelia, definetly don't go ripping it apart and putting different speakers in it.

that would ruin both the box, and the sound. The passive radiator is intended to reproduce bass off a pair of 6.5"" subs. It's not just a matter of sticking more speakers in it and letting it play. Box construction and design, is.

OK fellows, I'm lost. I know zip about stereo equipment.Would it be ok to replace the 6.5's and leave everything else alone? Or is there a horn that will fit to replace the old ones? Also, are the horns actually speakers? And, just what is a passive radiator? By the way, thanks for the replys. Badman

yes, look at Crutchfield, Pats express, ect for a 2x6 horn. All are the same size, and will plug right in. On the 6.5" subs, get a midbass driver, not a coax and they will fit, get single voice coil, 4 ohm.
On the passive, may take some looking, just search 10" passive radiator, there should be some still available, online somewhere.

Yea polecat yer right but with those small 6's and them big butt horns it's not like the box realy thumped. And actually i was wrong with the 6x9 i ment the (what is it?)4x9's that fit the 78-80+ back deck in the cutlass. And if ya isolate the 4x9's at either end then with and added small subs like say 8's and used filters on the 4x9's to drop the bass from em the whole box would effectively sound like 2 big butt 6x9's.While I may not do compitition type stuff i have altered a few junk box's with some degree of sucess. But then again i am also still learnin about alot of this new stuff on the market.Last time i did a complete system PYLE was a big dog on the market.I personaly have out in the shed a cheap box that had 8" subs in it (if ya wanna call em subs)dat I got at one those truck load sales for like 5.00 and did replace the little horns at the top of the box with 4x6's ,isloated the sectioin below em from the sub area, and replaced the dual crap subs with a single 8" sub (genaric rad shack)after closein the original holes. The 8" was for home stereo think it was 8 ohm.Any ways the thing sounded pretty good behind the seat of my old 70 F-100 even with all the holes from rust so could hear tires on the road and exhaust that ended right under the back the cab.It was cheap and effective. Not top the line nor would i be fool enuff ta try to put it up against anyones factory setup. It was cheap and dirty but worked.
Anyways it was just what I would do to make due with stuff cheap.Again it's not professional tech by a long shot.No math involved.Just gut and stuff.LOL.Best of luck and hopefully ya will figure it out Badman.

WOW!!! I havent seen one of these in years!! I remember a kid in my highschool had one in his pick up!! A punch 75 ran it and BOOOM!! If it still works, run it as it is.If it does not, Replace the cone speakers with another that fits. Most likely the piezo tweeters are fine (they are the horn speaker) I think with a decent amp running stereo, you will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of sound. This was a full range system, so no crossovers.
