amp n sub questions
I went the cheap route on my stereo system just a JVC deck, sony xplode 4x6 and 6x9, and last weekend I put a 600 watt xplode amp with 2 ten inch rockford fosgate used but sounded good in the car I bought them from.
It sounds good as a rounded system but if I put something that is heavy in bass the subs just rattle real bad and don't really put out any sound.
My question is is that the box I have is completely sealed box and in the past with other systems I put together the box would have like 3 inch holes on either side and they sounded great. So what do you think, is it the box the subs or just a combination of cheaping out on the setup? Thanks for your input.

Alright, the "holes" you referred to are called ports. It is a type of box design that uses these "holes" to increase the amount of sound at a specific frequency with a given amount of power. That being said... This may sound silly but are your speakers wired out of phase from each other? This would account for a lot of movement and very little bass. The buzzing may indicate that the subs are not securely screwed/bolted to the box or your sealed box is not sealed anymore. I would first make sure my woofers are wired correctly. Are they single or dual voice coil? Is the box 1 big open chamber or is it devided in the center. Let me know.

Ya, check to see if ur amp has a built in crossover and make sure its set on LPF allowing only low pass freguencies to pass through the amp and out the subs. If you have a mono amp there is nothing you can do. Also cheack to make sure you have the proper wattage for the subs, make sure the amp is putting out as much power and the subs are needed to power. Other than that, I dunno, maybe check the ground and make sure its not shorting out or sumthing, but ur amp should have protection so taht it wont even work. Hopefully I helped, if not, good luck.

Like thaforce said, check the crossover, I would only set the gains at no more than 3/4. I run a sealed divided box with two 12' Infinitys and it suits the TA's much better.

thanks
Thanks everyone for your input I looked it over when I got home and it is set on LPF. I haven't had a chance to really mess with the power settings but I'll start that tomorow. The box is divided in the center and I was thinking about cutting my own ports into it, I was thinking that maybe I crossed the wires inside the box I'll check that out this weekend probably.
Anyways thanks again everyone for your input it's definately helpful.

Yea there will be people that disagree with me but from the problems I've had, my ex-gf had, and friends have had its just not worth it. The car audio guy at this shop laughed at my friend for having a Sony Xplode Amp.

good luck on the troubleshooting adventure. Also make sure your subs are designed for a ported enclosure. It is a little more than popping a couple of holes into your box. I suggest looking at the manufacturer of your subs website for box specs. Most have several choices from sealed and free air to more complex ported and single reflex and dual reflex (4th-6th order). Usually for forted they are "tuned" to a specific frequency. This requires proper box volume and a piece of tubing or pipe of a certain diameter and length. Good luck!!

If your subs aren't made for a ported box, or if you don't have it ported right it will sound terrible and you can damage the subs.

I dought this is the problem, but, check the remote wire connection on the amp and make sure its secure and tight. Mine came loose yesterday.....800 watt 2 channell for front speakers and my left speaker was making a rattleing sound and the right speaker was barely putting out any sounds, somehow it shorted it out. Make sure the gains arent too high for the speakers either. If you get sounds, turn the gain up slowly until ur speakers distort, then turn it back down a notch.
And like they said, don't port just to see if it sounds good. Each speaker does have a volume and box preference for best sound. Make sure you haven't wired them wrong so that u brought the speaker down an ohm.
