Anyone have any pics of double din units installed?
Anyone have any pics of double din units installed?
I've been trying to search, but so far every post I find where someone says they've done it, or said they've seen it done. They never post any pics
Just like to get an idea of how one of the Eclipse double dins looks in a 3rd gen, if anyone has done it. How much modification was needed etc.
Thanks
Chris.

well here is a pic of a Pioneer Din and a half unit installed that I pirated from the bazooka tube thread... (sorry whoever owns this pic. Il take it down if you want.) Looks good, but if you look at the bottom you notice there isnt much room untill you hit the ashtray. For a double din you will have to do some trimming down there.

My Advice
I've been installing Car Audio for 20 Years, and the only way you are going to mount that big puppy is on the passanger side of a third Gen. Or you are going to have to relocate the A/C Ventalation system. I had 3 other Trans ams and 1 Camaro, and most of the Double Dins are ment for the 4 Gens, not mostly Domestic but Japananse. Because of their dash boards I guess.

That is a 1.5din. To make a Double-Din fit, your gonna need to do a little bit of tinkering. What I've seen some people do in 3rd Gen's is seal off the original radio slot and mount the new head unit on that ledge above the heat/air controls and cut a few small holes behind the new 'mount point' and wire it all up.

Looks like depth wise, I might be OK. I removed that metal bracket that is behind where the head unit goes. I'm not really sure what it was for, I think it might have been for the original stereo?
That gave me some extra room back there, I might need to trim down the vent ducts, not sure yet.
Now width wise, will be OK. So the next problem is the height of the unit. 4inches, It looks like I'll have to trim some of the metal bracket off that the heater control connects too. It appears that after I do this, that will give me just enough room to fit that in there.
Then on the radio bezel, I'll have to remove the center divider between the heater and radio. Then fabricate some sort of custom trim piece with what's left.
But overall I think I can get it in there, and look good at the same time too.
Going to be awhile before I start this project. Still have a lot of other work I want to get done on the car first. But looking forward to starting this!!

I've been looking at it more, and removed the radio bezel to get a better idea how much space I have.

Ya,
If I ever get this done, this might be for competing. So doing the custom route and making it look factory might pay off.
And actually if I mess up too bad. Radio Bezels are pretty cheap, and I could go to a junk yard and get another bracket for the heater control. So nothing I do will be permanent.
Just wish I could start this now!
but I need to finish all the other projects I've started first!

why why why why why would you put a double din receiver in there?! it's a 1.5 din opening, and the pioneer DEH-P77DH receiver is PERFECT for the 3rd gens. it's a full featured unit and i have absolutely no complaints about it whatsoever, a complete plug and play operation.
I'm sure that's a nice deck for you, but it's not what I'm looking for.
Maybe you haven't been keeping up on my thread on this car, but I'm trying to do a bunch custom work on it. One of the final parts will be the audio system, and I want something custom that nobody else will have.
The units I've been looking at, once I fabricate a new trim will be totally custom and hopefully look OEM.
