Removing stereo

I am going to take the stereo out of my car. The thing is, I know nothing about removing the stereo. The stereo itself just slides right out and unclips. How do I remove the wires from the battery?

There are connectors on the back of the stereo.

Re: Removing stereo

the only snag you may run into is a previous owner installing an aftermarket deck and hacking the harness.

Re: Removing stereo

Hopefully, the person who installed the aftermarket CD player bought a wiring harness adapter, rather than hack the original harness.

Even if the stock harness has been hacked, you might be able to repar it. I just had to do this on a stereo install on my '95 Formula.

Let us know what you find. It takes a while to get it all nice and neat, but it really isn't that hard.

I would advise you not to use wire nuts or lame crimp connectors for your connections, though. I only use Posi-Loks. The are awesome, and infinitely reuseable.

Re: Removing stereo

The stereo itself unsnapped pretty easy, but I didn't have time to take the harness itself. The stereo was made in 1998 so I guess its been in there awhile and hopefully the harness is a new one, but again I am not sure until I have a look. If the harness is hacked couldn't I just buy a new wiring harness?

Re: Removing stereo

I got lucky and found one in the junkyard. Parts guy there told me to just take it (free!!). Spliced it into the car and used it for a Delco Theftlock CD stereo head unit and it looks stock.

Re: Removing stereo

If the wiring harness on the back of the stereo needs to be replaced, that isn't a big deal. The bigger hassle is if the harness that is a part of the car is hacked. I know that on 4th gens at least, the harness has two wires of the same color, so when trying to repair the harness you have to figure out which wire goes to which position on the harness.

Re: Removing stereo

Correct, IIRC the harness I ended up with was a 4th gen style with the 20 pin connector and there were 2 wires the same color.

Yeah, I think it is a pair of off-white or brown wires. One goes to a speaker, and the other is a 12v keyed source.

Re: Removing stereo

Of course, just as I feared, they hacked into the original harness. My plan was to remove that stereo and put it in my other car. Do I need the stereo wires left in the firebird to do that? I just unclipped the stereo and took it out. Do I need that clip or could I buy that new?

Re: Removing stereo

As long as the wiring in your other car is unmolested and depending on the year it will either plug in directly or you can buy an adapter harness.

Re: Removing stereo

What is the model of the stereo you pulled, and what car is it going into?

Re: Removing stereo

leave yourself some slack in the wires from the CD player to work with like 4 inches. cut out the wires from the bird with the connector attached that plugs into the back of the player, you can get a connector that is make/model appropriate to the car you are installing it into at most auto stores. soldering is the best way to attach the wires with the connector to the new harness for the instalee car. solder the wires together and you should be in business
