How can one blow an amp?

I'm getting a replacement amp tomorrow for my Audiobahn A4004V that recently blew. Whatever happened inside I don't know, but I was popping 30 amp power cable fuses instantly upon installing them. There was zero oms between the power terminal and the ground terminal, so hooking it up was basically grounding the positive battery terminal. It blew after 3 months of being installed. If the problem is with my SETUP, I would like to FIX it before installing the new amp.

Its driving two Infinity 4x6 speakers up front and two Infinity 6x9 speakers in the rear. The volume was down when it blew.

I have it positioned atop the rear hump, on the right side, right behind the head of the person sitting in the rear right side seat. It is ALWAYS under the cargo shade, and my back window has some super dark tint. Could it still be too much heat? The sun didn't hit it once.

The deck is a Pioneer DEH-2700. The Preamp output voltage for this deck is 2.2v, and I had the amp level set accordingly. (about 70% based on Audiobahn's instructions)

Any guesses on why it blew? Defective product?

seems to me to be a defect in the amp itself not your set up, i would just hook it back up and go to town with it

Re: How can one blow an amp?

I would possibly say that maybe the speakers were different OHM level than what the amp was putting out at that wiring... Sounds like what I did with my Audiobahn amp my subs were different ohms than my amp...and it blew..

Re: How can one blow an amp?

it being an audiobahn it was probably internal, they just had the company that made their stuff close shop, and are using 2 or 3 different manufacturers trying to find one that can make them right

Re: How can one blow an amp?

The speakers are Infinity Reference, 4 ohm impedance I'm pretty sure. Do I have to do something special for these with my amp?

If everything was hooked up properly, it's most just the amp.

This is one of the reasons I tell people to avoid them, they are one of those companies that go after the 'bling' with shiny subs etc, but the quality inside their products are questionable.

Re: How can one blow an amp?

Every now and then i get a whiff of mild electronic smell from my amp. I do now and i did with the old one. Is this normal? Doesn't smell like burning.
