Right side speakers stopped working?

Hey guys I've got another problem on my hands, this time it's with the 'birds stereo.

Driving to work yesterday I heard a little pop and noticed the right front speaker wasn't working. I was just outside screwing with it a few mins ago hoping I could fix it and noticed that the rear right wasn't working either (tho it may have been possible that the right side never worked when I bought it 2 months ago and just never noticed). But both speakers will play if I crank the stereo as high as it will go and set the unit to play only out of that speaker.

Any ideas what's wrong with my stereo? Did my dash unit finally go (it's the stock unit)? Wiring problem? Blown speakers? Thanks in advance!

Re: Right side speakers stopped working?

By your description, it sounds like your head unit. I have a 91 that I have replaced 3 times and one of my failures sounds just like yours (no sound on one side). I bought OEM reconditioned units from a shop in Atlanta. You send them yours and get the same model/type back (not your unit repaired).

The last one cost me $120 for a 91 AM/FM/Cassette with equalizer and I got it in 2002. The company is:

Speedometer Service Co. in Roswell, GA 770-569-8255

I found this shop through an Atlanta Pontiac dealer that used them for their radio and guage replacements. There is probably a similar shop in your area but these guys did fine by me even after I left Atlanta and moved to Florida.

If you don't care about "original condition", I would just go buy a new head unit with today's features (MP3 capability, etc). Lots of sound quality improvements in going this route.

Goos Luck.

Thanks for the reply. I really hope it's the head unit considering I planned on putting a new one in at the end of the month. I guess I have a good reason to buy a new unit now .

Re: Right side speakers stopped working?

This is exactly the symptoms mine had when I bought it, although the right side worked once at a random time. I replaced the head unit and speakers to add Sirius. New speakers connected to the factory wires work fine, so it must have been the head unit in my case.

I agree. Every time a "side" went out in my experience it requires a new head unit. This is the one area of our cars that time has improved so much that it is almost a no brainer to install a modern head unit and speakers.

Re: Right side speakers stopped working?

I'm having a similar problem but I'm not sure what to do about it. Someone who owned the car before me put in an aftermarket stereo, but took it out and put the stock one back in (as shown below). I got some stock plugs from a junkyard and wired up the stereo using colors and a diagram.

I pulled the cover off the back speakers and they're pioneer speakers so I'm assuming the ones in the dash board are too, and none of them are blown.
I was driving around today and like the speakers would start to pop and crackle, and if I turned the stereo off, it would stop. So definitely something to do with wiring/stock unit (which is a head unit right? ) Not only that, I have to turn the volume up almost as loud as it will go to even start to hear it, with the windows and t-tops up. The facelight of the stereo won't light up either when you turn the lights on.

Please let me know what might be going on.
