Do amps usually smell?

My audiobahn amp driving 4 speakers always smells like electronics. Doesn't smell like burning, just strong "electronic" smell if you know what I mean. Last one I had did the same thing and it blew. Problem?

Usually a smell is a sign of overheating.

Its just sitting on the carpet on the rear hump behind the passenger side back seat. No sun, cold day. Not sure what to think.

Re: Do amps usually smell?

Ive run 2 amps on carpet under seats for many of months at a time and no smell or problems.

Are you running correct gauge wiring for the amps?

Re: Do amps usually smell?

audiobahn amps stink anyways! lol, for real though are you running the correct load (ohms)? right size fuse? proper power and ground cables? If yes to all, it might be the coating they used on the circuit board(s). <just throwing that one out there. A little boy in Thailand made that amp anyways.
Next time spend a couple more $'s and buy an amp thats built in the USA!
good luck

Re: Do amps usually smell?

How many Ohm are the speakers? Is it a two or four channel amp? Do you have the amp "bridged" with all four speakers? Is your amp 2 Ohm or lower stable. If you have 4 4 Ohm speakers wired parallel your amp has a load of 1 Ohm. If you had 4 8 Ohm speakers wired the same way you'd have a 2 Ohm load.

I may have messed up a little of the terminology, but that's how it works with the Ohms and stuff. My 2 RF 12's are 8 Ohm because my amp is only stable at 4 Ohms.

The lower the Ohms the hotter the amp will run, possibly burning up your amp.

Good Luck

^^^^^^^^What he said^^^^^^^^^^

Tell us how you have it wired, maybe some pictures. I run my amps on the carpet, no problems. Amp model, speaker model, whatever info you can share will help.
