Just blew out a speaker... What next?

I had to stop at work to pick up my check and left him in the car. Turns out the music wasn't loud enough for him. Once I got the check, I came out to find the radio off and him sitting there with an odd expression on his face. I didn't bother turning it on but we continued hanging out. The next day I turn on my radio and hear all kinds of crackling... He admitted to doing it.

I am surprised he was able to blow the speakers. Now, I'm not that into audio stuff, but I'm pretty sure Infinity makes quality speakers... and yet he was able to trash them. So, now I have to look into new speakers. What are some good brands with quality products? I don't want to spend a fortune because I just dropped over $1200 on my suspension. I'm only planning on replacing the 4 speakers in the stock locations. What sizes are they?

Please help... the lack of music is getting to me...

Well I am a true believer in Sony equipment has never done me wrong at all. All my vehicles have sony in them even the 92 camaro I am building right now. Not bad on the price either.

The sizes are 4x6 in the front and 6x9 in the back. I had the same thing happen to me, yes, infinity speakers are really good, but just a head unit doesnt put out enough power to give full sound to the speakers, so u get distortion, when distorion gets to high, it blows the speakers. If u put an amplifier on nice infinity speakers, u'll blow your eardrums b4 the speakers. But you have to watch the noise level if ur only getting power from ur head unit.

Re: Just blew out a speaker... What next?

I have a Sony head unit and Infinity speakers. I'm thinking of getting a new head unit so I can plug my iPod into it. How hard is it to swap this stuff? Just unplug the old and plug in the new? I was thinking about a sub and an amplifier but I don't know where to put them, and I don't want to lose what little truck space I already have.

How much would a decent sound system cost?

for a set of new good speakers and head unit ur looking at around 450-600 depending on how into the sound quality you are. as far as getting a sub without using the well in ur trunk, i kno pioneer came out with a xtra thin subwoffer that will fit on the flat part of the trunk above the well, its pricy tho

450-600??? what kind of crazy audio stores do you go too?
Just find out what speaker is blown. I doubt he blew all 4.
If you wanna go all out go on ebay and get it for cheap. Probably only spend $300 bucks tops. $150 or less for headunit, $50 for 4x6, $70 for 6x9s.

I'm just looking for a budget oriented system that sounds good when used for a variety of music. I don't need anything top of the line... but I also don't want to buy the cheap crap that works for like a year and then dies.

Re: Just blew out a speaker... What next?

Have your "friend" pay for it... He blew them... I prefer round speakers as opposed to oval 4x6 or 6x9, some plate speakers have a round woofer and tweet...

If you can, try getting a 4 channel amp and set the gains properly so that it will lessen the chance of this happening again....

There are some good sounding budget priced speakers & there are some that aren't... I just spent about $850 getting a set of the last German made MB Quarts shipped from there... a 4" and 6.5" component set...

Re: Just blew out a speaker... What next?

The main reason your speakers blew btw was because they were under powered. It will happen to any speakers that are just setup with the deck. 15rms to each speaker basically when they are rated at 50+rms.
If you want something that is gonna last get a amp and wire it up to last or just go on ebay and get some speakers for cheap and just don't crank it to 30+ or whatever your max is. And kick your friend in the nuts

Re: Just blew out a speaker... What next?

ok, thanks for the sizes, but what brands are good to go with? I've read sony and an expensive german brand...

the only thing I know about speakers is that they allow me to listen to my music... that's the extent of my knowledge when it comes to this.
