Looking for some Kick Panel mold advice please

I'd like to know if making a mold of the original kick panel would work instead of removing it and trying to fabricate a whole new one and trying to form it around the door sill. My plan is to remove and cover the original panel with blue painters tape and tinfoil, then layer it up. Once it's complete I was hoping to then create the rest of it with a speaker ring, fleece and more glass. Thsi way I can preserve the originak one In case I ever choose to go back to stock.

layering over top of the kick panel would only make a mold of the part. your best bet is to find a junkyard set that look like doo doo for cheap. they'd be covered up anyway, and build directly off of those. here's my old ones, interior is all new now:

Thats kind of what I was hoping to do, then build on it from there. Would an exact mold work though?

Re: Looking for some Kick Panel mold advice please

with what you are describing, you would be left with a mold of the original part. it would be larger than your finished part, it would not fit around the sill area, and most likely nowhere else. you would then have to remove the original panel from the mold, which may be difficult considering the multiple angles of the part. the mold would require finishing work on the inside of itself, i.e. filling of craters and pinholes. then you would have to apply mold release compound (or Pam spray) then begin to build your replacement panels from the mold by filling the mold with layers of fiberglass. which would then require more fiberglass, as you will most likely be able to only apply 2 or so layers before you will be unable to remove it from the mold. then more finishing work.
The mold itself would take quite some time, and if you are only making one set, it would most likely be very frustrating.

Depending in your budget and the size of speaker you want to use did you look into qforms??? They come up on ebay here and there and if you need em in a rush Crutchfield has em in stock...usually 170ish UDS plus 20 bucks shipping.

Maybe ill just mod the ones I have now. The likyhood of going back to stock is slim to none. I'd rather keep the 170.00 U.S in my pocket if I can, and make them myself. I'm putting 5 1/4 inch speakers into the kick plate so I imagine they won't be anything mounstrous.

prolly your best bet. A junkyard set shouldn't be a lot of money though, 10-15 USD around here. the color wouldn't matter, they could even be faded and have small cracks in them.

Unfortunately the old F-bodies are very hard to come by in these parts

if you plan on "molding" a part give it a good heavy coat of wax.it will act as a "mold release agent" and allow the "molded"part to easily pop off the original piece.i have done this many time with fiberglass parts at the shop where i work.
