Does the Bose System have low level output from the head unit?

Re: Bose Head Unit
Yes, it's a preamp signal that is sent to the amp on each speaker. The amp amplifies it to play on the speaker. If you were to hook up the radio to a regular sound system, you could turn it all the way up and still barely hear it, it's be lik a whisper.

Re: Bose Head Unit
The bose head unit works well with normal line-level
aftermarket amps-i use a bose from an '84 vette for the
"old skool",totally '80s 400+watt system in my car,
-when i want to rock i get in the camaro!
WEAR IT PROUD/PLAY IT LOUD!!

Re: Bose Head Unit
With this type of head unit, does someone make a wiring adapter (metra or something) to change the speaker outputs into RCA to run to a different amp?

Re: Bose Head Unit
Nope, you will have to make up some adaptors-bose
head unit has the same output plugs as normal '78-88
delco head unit, splice some rca plugs onto the output
plugs-polarity is embossed on radio. The output of the
bose unit is very low,so you will need amps with a lot
of gain.Performance of the bose head is very good and
the blaupunkt cassette transport that GM uses is the
best car cassette ever made(very early bose uses a
cassette mechanism made by-i think-matsushita
,not bad but not as good as the blaupunkt-no music
search on these) I first installed the bose head in my
car in 1993(have had to do some of the usuall repairs
every once in a while since then)

Re: Bose Head Unit
Is there anything special about the splice from the back of the stereo into the rca cable?

Re: Bose Head Unit
Nope, just get some spare delco radio plugs, connect
the +output from the delco plugs to the center wire/pin
of the RCAs and the(-)s from the delco plugs to the
sheild/outer braid of the RCAs.

Re: Bose Head Unit
Those could be made to work-i would use co-ax if i had
to go very far with them though(to reduce the chance
of interference or noise) When i did my "old skool"
system i made new speaker locations up front because
the highs sounded harsh reflecting off the windsheild
6.5"eminence woofers in lower door,3.5 midrange in
the lower dash ends(where the A/C vents are),1"morel
tweeters in the door handle panels-sounds way better
than stock front setup.

If I choose an amp with both low level and speaker level input, which should I use with the Bose Head Unit?

you will have to use the low level and turn up the
sensitivity on the amp as the output from the bose
head is pretty low

Re: Bose Head Unit
So my Bose radio turns on and the radio plays fine, but the cd player does not spin. Can I replace the cd part from another head unit? If so any directions? By the way, its actually a 1993 Bose Camaro Cd player, it was much cheaper than 90-92 yellow lettered head units.

Re: Bose Head Unit
Probably could use the CD unit from another delco
stereo of the same era,i would guess non-bose would
be the same-is on the cassette versions. Once i fixed
a 1998 delco CD with the same problem for a buddy
-when player was assembled,a wire for the spindle
motor was out of position and got stuck to a freshly
varnished circuit board, causing wire to eventually
break loose-soldered back on and repositioned-fixed!
Somewhere i have a cosmeticly damaged '92 pontiac
CD-if i find it i will have a look to see if can come up
with any ideas on the problem(will post it here if i
do) good luck!

Re: Bose Head Unit
I have another working Bose Cd player with white-lettering, that I could swap with the defective one. Does anyone have any instructions on this?

Re: Bose Head Unit
Also, the wiring diagram for the 93 unit has +LF, +RF, a "Common Front (-?)", and shield for the typical forth wire in stereo output. Should I wire this unit to my amp the same way? Is the shield for interference suppression? Or can I do the typical, +- +-?
Same for the rear speaker outputs as well.

Re: Bose Head Unit
I am going to create a write up on how to swap cd players inside the head units.
Does anyone know the bulb number for 93-96 head units?
Also, I may switch out the gray buttons from the yellow faced head unit with black buttons. This will make the head unit look even more factory.

Re: Bose Head Unit
Ive swapped out the cd mechanisms from inside a few factory delco cd players. Not really that tough. They just have to be from the same era and look similar.Although Ive noticed that some of the 4th gen pontiac cd players have different connections for the internal cd units. Some have a ribbon connector while others have a pin type connector.I also noticed that the earlier delco cd players that I pull at the junkyards usually do not work so its harder to find swap out cd mechanisms for them.Ive have found 2 of early style cd players that were junk but had good cd units to swap into other players.Just got a good working delco bose cd player from a 95 camaro the other day. Here is a picture of the cd player I have in both of my irocs. Its a very rare unit that came in buick roadmasters, lesabres and supposedly typhoons and syclones.

I created a pdf with instructions and pictures on swapping cd player mechanism; however it is 2mb and am unable to upload directly to TGO. Does anyone have a place to upload this file?
