Hey just I just got my 88 Iroc home tonight and Im trying to put in a JVC deck that I had. I got the one that was in it out and low and behold someone butched all the wires they didnt use any sort of a wire harness. So any any of you guys show me a diagram or tell me what each wire color is? I thought I had it done, finished and right, the unit turns on with the key, lights come on, everything works correct but sound so I dont know what I did wrong. Is there just the 1 small green ground wire?

The ones on the left are the GM colors, the ones on the right the typical aftermarket colors according to install DR.com

Ok after looking at it some more I realize they did use a wiring harness that seems to plug both sets of speaker wire plugs into. However the other set of wires from factory are all butched out and I cant seem to figure out what Im doing wrong here. Theres one long green wire with a black stripe that doesnt go to anything on the previous install it was to a ground, I hooked it to a ground and still get no sound. There is also a gray wire that goes to nothing, they had it hooked to nothing and it worked. The deck that was in it was a pile of junk though thats why Im pulling it out. As far as the wiring is concerned for the speaker wires it seems to be correct I cant figure out why Im not getting any sound. The unit powers on fine, constant power for the clock, just NO SOUND its really getting me irritated. Can anybody tell me what the wiring was for the original first set of wires that was in a black coil? It seems like there is suppose to be 3 wets, 2 for the speaker wire sets and another set for power and such. I may be wrong Im just winging it by what I can see after someone elses butch job.

Why do alot of people ask if its the bose system? Does this make a difference? Mine says delco/bose if that matters or not. I really wish I could get this thing figured out its driving me NUTS! You would think with the deck coming on and lighting up, it would either be a ground issure or speaker wire connection issues.

After looking for 5 minutes today that green wire Im talking about is actually a ground run by the PO so now at least I know what it is. I ended up just calling an audio place if its the bose stuff I dont have time to mess with it. Thanks for all the help though I appreciate it.

 

It does look like a Bose system. In a Bose system, the speakers themselves have the amplifiers built into them, not in the head unit. My first step would be to see if the stock speakers are even still there? (I've gone hours trying to figure a system out, only to realize the speakers were not there, LOL) if the haven't been removed, then you have to power up the blue wire coming off the harness in the car, your Radio should have a blue/white wire, connect those two together, this should activate the amps. the sound will not be great, you are amplifying an already amplified signal and will increase distortion. my suggestion would be to remove all stock speakers, and replace with decent quality aftermarket speakers and run new speaker wires to each speaker, this is pretty easy to do and should only take 1 1\2 to 2 hours. that way, you know what your working with and dont have to worry about bypassing amps or using the stock speakers.

 

I have the same problem. I've been banging my head against this one all day. The factory head unit I have is bad, and I had some extra cash and bought a Kenwood unit. I hooked it up, and got no sound out of the speakers whatsoever.

So...If it's going to sound like garbage, what should I do? If I connect those two wires to make it work, is it going to even sound decent? I don't have the time, money, or energy at the moment to spend on speakers and rewiring. Is there a compatible factory head unit with a CD player that I could look for on Ebay or something? Mine's an 87.

 

Emily on my car there was no speakers under the dash, and no speakers in the rear of the car other than the hatch which were the bose. I found it easiest to run new wires to each speaker and use the factory power and ground and the new wires to each speaker. I understand that money is an issue it was for me as well since I had just purchased the car. I hope you get it lined out, it sucks not having a radio.

 

try this splice the blue wire and the red wire on the connector together and then plug your connector to the factory wiring

 

I think the radio I bought wouldn't power the amps. I bought a Kenwood MP242. I wasn't married to it, so I returned it and am just dealing with the stock stereo that sometimes works. The stereo I bought didn't have an extra wire comming off of it to connect to the amps, unless I was way off in guessing which wire powered the amps. I assumed it was the extra red wire that plugs into the old radio which wouldn't connect to the wiring harness I bought. The only extra wires off the wiring harness for the new radio was one that's labeled "unused" which didn't work when I connected it. And one for "mute" which is for connecting a bluetooth unit too. I called Kenwood...they didn't have an answer. I went to the store I bought the radio from, and I didn't really like their answer which was bring it in and pay them to install all new speakers, and an amp. I suppose I have to find a radio that will work, or just deal with replacing speakers sometime which I don't want to do. When the radio works, the speakers sound really nice...I'd like to keep them.
