I originally had a sub box in the cargo area but I scrapped it and made a lid for the cargo area with a hinge and made the subs built in with the amp mounted on the floor underneath. I noticed a serious loss of bass power when i did this, i;m guessing it is because the subs aren't sealed and sound is escaping downward. I was thinking about using either a mixing bowl or a wok (purchased from "Bed, Bath and Beyond") to seal each sub... Will it work?? i don't see why not but i'm just a novice...

Is there a disadvantage to using a metal material behind the sub??

 

By placing a bowl behind the sub you are gonna limit the space it has to breathe, different subs require different enclosures where they sound better,theres free air subs that will perform well in an infinite baffle (no enclosure) like say in the rear deck of a car.

I'd personally wouldnt try it....

and 2nd if you use a metal material behind the sub is gonna rattle like a bitch unless you deaden the hell out of it,is there a reason why u wanna do that?

The reason is because when it was in a box, it sounded great, but there's no cargo space. How it is right now it's just the opposite. I had to crank the volume on the Amp to get it close to where it was before...

 

I dont think I follow...where do you have the sub mounted? In the cover?

If so the solution would be to cut the cover in a way that as little air as possible escapes and make sure that the cover isnt bouncing around, but again...different subs need different pressure behind them to sound deep.. thats one thing to try though.

Your best bet would be to find out whats the optimal enclosure size for ur sub and go from there.

But yeah...any sub needs certain amount of pressure behind it to create those low notes,
if the air is scaping somewhere you are definately losing db's right there.

Its happened to me and yeah you have to turn up the volume big time.

Thats why the better sealed a box is,the tighter the bass will be.

I'd either build a small box for ur sub or get some shallow mount ones.

 

yea i made a lid for the cargo area. They are 12" Kenwoods, (I believe 800W?)... i want to avoid the box if possible...

 

Chances are, the area that is now acting as "the box", has way to much space, compared to the space that the box was giving them.

 

so whats the disadvantage of having "not enough space" as in the bowl idea?
