I just got a stereo off an 1990 oldsmobile. It was a junker i had lying around so i just cut the harness way far back in there so i could see what wires go where. Tomorrow i'm going to start installing it and i was wondering if theres anything i need to look out for? Are the wires color coded? Is it plug and play? And worst case scenario how much would it cost to get it installed? Thanks so much.

 

I'm not specifically familiar with Oldsmobile radios, but I would be surprised if it's not plug-and-play. If it isn't, there are adapter cables you can buy that plug into the car's harness and then into radio. These are all color coded, so it's just a matter of crimping together wires to build your adapter harness. Even though it costs a few bucks, I would definitely go this route rather than cutting the wires in your car. It will be 10 times easier to change radios down the road (if you want) and to work on the electrical system if you go the adapter route. Apart from this, it's a pretty simple job to install.

ok it looks exactly the same except for front speakers.
Does that mean i can wire it up myself?
Called a local shop and they want 60$ to fix it?
How easy would it be to install?

 

If the plug in the back of the radio matches the ones in the dash, plug it in and put the screws to mount the radio and you're done. If the plugs don't match, check the Crutchfield web site for the plugs to adapt the Olds type to the Chevy type. If you have to go this route, one plug will be female and will fit the plugs in your dash harness. The other plug will fit the Olds radio. The other end of both plugs will be colored wires. Just join the same colors with crimp fittings (red to red, black to black, purple to purple, etc.). Plug the dash harness into you new adapter, then plug the other end into the Olds radio and you're all set.

What do the numbers mean?
Printed out the key that Project listed for pocket reference is this the same thing?

As far as how i will do it.
I'm assuming just to strip the wires already in the harness and connect them with electrical tape and maybe some wiring tubes.
Will this work? Any specific order i should connect them in?
I figure i should at least try to save myself 60 bucks.
And a little off topic but is this a good radio? Thanks!

 

It's pretty hard to see from the pictures, but are the wires going into the back of the radio hard-wired in or do they plug in? If they plug in, do the plugs match the ones already in your car?

 

It goes into the HU with a plug, but the plug cant be removed at least i dont know if it can.

 

Pull that orange tab out, and then press the release clip and the harness should unplug.

 

Update***

Well, after about a week of headscratching and googling.
The PO of my Rs decided to cut the wiring harness, its butchered.
So i'm going to take it to a professional.
I dont like the idea of doing it but i dont want to mess up my girl.

 

I have a question. Why would you put a 20 year old radio in it when you can get a new good head unit that does MP3, ect and will sound WORLDS better for $150 including harness and kit to fit in in the place of the original radio?
