Wiring Help

Ok so a while back I installed new Pioneer Speakers in my car in place of the old ones, and I put in 200 watt 3-way speakers in the dash, and 300 watt 4 way speakers in the rear. And now I'm trying to wire in an dual sub 600-watt system in its own box that fits perfectly in the well of the trunk.

But for me to do that, I need to get an amp because I'm still running my original head unit, and getting an after market one is out of the question.

So I can understand splicing a wire to make an extension into the trunk for the subs in the trunk, but now how will these new speakers effect my amp set up?

http://www.walmart.com/ip/DP-Audio-2...200.5/12347328

Is this what I need?

And once I get an amp I need to get an install kit for it, but would I need an install kit for the subs?

When it comes to this kind of stuff I just get confused...

Thanks for any help!

Re: Wiring Help

Not sure you can run a sub off the OEM head unit - the amp needs a remote on wire from the headunit to operate, as well as it's own inputs for sound from the head unit. If you simply (for example) splice into the rear speaker wires to send the sound to the amp, then you'll be changing the resistance of the output to both the rear speakers and the amp. In other words, speakers are set for certain resistance in ohms, and the resistance assumes single wiring from head unit to those particular speakers.

I'm no car stereo guru - but I don't think you can do what you want without a new head unit that has RCA outputs for the amp and a remote on wire for the amp.

In addition, that amp you're looking at will not drive 2 10" subs very well - heck mine is an el cheapo no brand model and it's 1000 watt. It states 240 watt x 5 speakers (or channels) - you'll only have 2 10" subs - you need more watts and less channels for your subs. UNLESS you thought you'd run the subs AND the rear speakers off that amp - then you would need more channels - but the subs aren't going to be very effective at that wattage, and more watts would blow your rear speakers.

Make sense?

You need an amp for the subs that's a stand alone - high wattage, 2 channel. If you want to amplify the other 4 speakers, then taht walmart amp you were looking at would be good for amplifying the other 2 front and 2 rear speakers.

And I don't think the factoruy head unit is going to have the outputs necessary for any amp.

BUT - like I said - no expert here - let someone else chime in!

Re: Wiring Help

Ok so once I get that plug and play adapter, how does the amp come into play, and how do I plug that up?

after you wire the adapter as shown, you will plug in the rca that goes to the amp into the adapter, and the blue wire into the amps remote( after wyou have the amp wired properly of course)

Re: Wiring Help

You'll need an amp install kit - it's basically a really thick red wire, with a huge fuse inline, about 20ft long, and a slightly smaller black wire. Red goes directly to battery terminal, and gets routed through the car to the amp, black connects to ground anywhere.

The big red wire - this sucker draws alot of juice - thus it's size. Make triple quadruple sure that it will never short out on anything! Where I drilled holes to t=run mine through the firewall (under the pass side kick panel), I got a piece of fuel line with an inside diameter equal to the outside diameter of the amp wire, ran the amp wire through 4 inches of this fuel line, and then drilled my hole the size of the outside diameter of the fuel line - that way I had a nice extra 3/16ths of an inch rubber fuel line as insulatore to make sure the red wire never would rub through and short.

The reason for the safety precaution ... two parts Camaros I've bought for cheap were on fire when that wire shorted out because someone was in a hurry and didn't protect it - it shorted the battery, causing it to explode, and thus set the car on fire. One of them (a nice 1985 Z28), the resulting fire got so hot under the hood that the carb actually melted on the intake!

Re: Wiring Help

Oh my god.....

How did you route that wire then to the back of the car for the amp?

And then once I get the amp, the install kit, and the inline plug and play adapter all I do is get the RCA cable to connect it and walah?!

Re: Wiring Help

I drilled my one and only hole through the sidewall close to where the ECM wires run through - the wire then runs through the fenderwell and to the battery. To the rear, it runs under my carpet between the pass seat and the door sill, under the carpet all the way to the rear of the car - coumes out under the bottom edge of the plastic panel in the rear that holds the spare tire.

My remote wire runs from the back of the head unit and under the center console, under the carpet between the rear seats, and under the rear cargo carpet. I basically removed the carpet from the car to run it.

Sounds like I'm going to have some work to do once I get everything that I need, it shouldn't be too bad, plus I like to do that kind of stuff anyway.

Re: Wiring Help

it might not be a bad idea to have this professionally installed or trying to find someone that has done this before to help you through it. It is not difficult but if you dont know what you are doing you could screw up your whole system and cost you more in the long run rather than having it installed

Re: Wiring Help

you could also purchase the amp kit and a in line level converter and as for the remote for the amp. you can tap the yellow wire thats behind the radio. there's two yellow wire one is a little thicker than the other one. the thicker on is the one you want. or tap the radio or ignition fuse for the remote wire
