Protect mode when accelerating

I have a real weird problem here. Hooked up an infinity 4 channel amp, and everything is good when the cars off. Amp and head unit work fine, sounds great. However, when the cars on the amp goes into protect mode as I accelerate. It doesn’t matter what gear I’m in (I can be in neutral too) but when I hit the gas the amp goes into protect mode. If I idle, the amp does fine, I can crank the volume with no issues. The protect mode only becomes a problem when I’m revving the engine.

I checked all the grounds for the head unit and amp, tried 3 different spots for each. The problem persists. So what I think is going on is that the amp may be receiving too much current when I hit the gas. Is that even a possibility? I’ve double-checked the amp turn on cord from the head unit as well. All the wiring seems fine… I’m at a loss. Any thoughts audio gurus?

Re: Protect mode when accelerating

Check the alternator output voltage, or for a quicky test, pull the alternator connector and rev the engine see what it does then

I'm at my girls house right now (she drove), I wont be able to check until tomorrow. Lets assume that is the problem though, what would be the fix for it?

Oh man, thats heartbreaking to hear. Is there any way to throw an inline regulator on the power cord to the amp maybe?

No.. You're alternator charges you're battery, If it's not putting out proper voltage than you're battery is not charging properly and most likely will not last long. You're amp could also be bad though, it could have bad power regulators inside of it.

Re: Protect mode when accelerating

Thinking I found the problem. It was the alternator. I was driving the car back from a quick food stop and my lights died on me last night. Engine continued to run, but not for long I figure. Got home ok, and will be pulling the alternator tomorrow.

Re: Protect mode when accelerating

It was the alternator, replaced it today, and everything gravy. Can stomp on the gas all day, and it doesn't go into protect. Thanks for the help, Turbo and Mike.
