why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I just recently installed my system in my car and im running two sony xplod 6.5's in my dash, two 6.9s in my rear, two 12" sony xplod 1300watt subs, an 800 watt mono pioneer amp, and a boss 2 farad capacitor running off a sony xplod headunit and it pounds, so why does everyone look down on sony?

also i might add that i took my SPX subs out of their factory box and put my sonys in there, so they are in a smaller box.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

Well people discredit them because their an entry line for car audio. I heard one 12" sony and I didnt think it was that bad for the price but keep in mind your definition of pound may be a lot different than others I have 2 12" running 2200 watts and I dont think its loud but others cover their ears lol. Also dont try to put anything near 1300 watts into those subs then you'll see them xplod lol. But overall there not too bad!

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

well theres the sony part...they belong in homes not in cars, they always release a hack product that barely serves it function, and ive seen quite a few people bring in blown sony subs (xplod....hmmmmm imagine that) because they were rated to 1200rms, people max out that number so many of the spiders seperate lol they are entry line to boost money because people who dont know any better, they look at jensen and sony both low low end...and go well ive never heard of jensen...but SONY?? YEAH! ive never seen a single good car audio product from them, speakers have horrible distortion, subs go boom quick, crossovers dont do their job correctly....and the decks like to heat up and have verrrry limited features....so its like a lose lose all around

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

Both my decks in my cars are Sony Xplod. One is a higher end unit I got from Crutchfield a few years back, the other is a cheap unit I bought from Best Buy. I like em both never had any problems with em. As for Xplod speakers I had a 12" Xplod that sounded terrible and seemed to blow really quick. I personally like the Sony decks because I like the options easy to use, wireless remote, aux input on the front of the deck plus I can switch the display colors to red. I run Kenwood stuff for the 6x9's, amp and sub in both my cars.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I have a basic system, nothing fancy.
sony cdx-gt300
pioneer boxes 4x6 2 way front
pioneer boxes 5x9 rear 3 way back
sony 6 disc mp3 changer in the trunk.
sony ericsson bluetooth kit.

and im happy with my system.

BUT I have to admit that you do hear that the music isn't as full as with a pioneer deck or something. it doesn't sound as smoooth.

this could also be because my enclosures in the back arent in that great condition and I dont run a subwoofer. but still, its noticable.

then why dont I change to a pioneer.
1) I had to hack into my wires and if would reinstall another radio this would require me the resolder the old GM connector back onto the car. and find a gm-1 to "new radio " connector for my car wich arent easy to find over here.
2) if I change my deck i also have to change my mp3 changer.
3) I like my radio, it fits my interior and ahs everything it needs + I dont want to spend any money on a radio if I can spend that money somewhere else.

btw, does anyone here knows any aftermarket 1.5 din radio's

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

When I was in the business, Sony's subs and amps were crap. Their amps were constantly going into protect and their subs popped like popcorn when you gave them any real power.

That said, I never got any experience with any of their "high end" stuff. Of course, if you can't trust a company's entry line, why would you try their upper end?

TRUE! Funny though, Sony invented the cd and dvd... I would never use sony in my own cars, though when I owned my own shop I carried them (Cheap buy-in for sony, was only $5,000 back then) But stopped carrying them after a few years. They were a warranty nightmare and I was losing repeat business because of them. I would get a master carton of their cd players and turn around and send the same box back to the factory with return items.

I have sold/used a lot of source units over the years and have found that it is hard to beat Pioneer for overall value.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I should start out that I am a huge Sony lover. I have Sony home audio receivers, subwoofer, DVD players, boom boxes, MP3 Walkman, headphones, ear buds, etc.

Very happy with them and their quality.

I recently changed my amp from a Kenwood amp to a Sony MX-1652Z (can check on the model numbers if needed - don't remember off hand.)

I was excited to make the change and get something newer as the Kenwood is fairly old. I only use the amp for the rear 6x9 set. The sub is powered by another amp, and the fronts have a small amp that won't overdrive the 4x6 little guys.

I can definitely say that the sound quality of the Sony is much lower than the Kenwood. The lows are not as deep, the highs not as clear and the power is lower (but not sure what the Kenwood is, so that may be correct). The sound is much more relegated to mid range and my personal taste is I hate mid range sounding systems.

I am changing back to the Kenwood and will be selling the Sony.

Not bashing, as once again I am a huge Sony supporter. But this very real world experience says to me that this particular Sony was not as good sounding.

I have a Pioneer head unit in the $350-$400 range, Pioneer TS 4x6 fronts, a JBL 80Wx2 front amp, Alpine Type S 6x9s and a 400w powered 10 inch JBL sub.

Not the highest end, but certainly not crap. The change to the Sony and the resulting loss in fidelity was noticeable.

Just my two cents!

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

All of the Sony Xplod (or most Sony car audio) that I've used/heard/tried sounds "ok", but once you hear real quality, high end stuff, the Sony stuff just tends to be "blah". Its cheap and you can get it anywhere, which in the car audio realm usually translates into entry level.

I spent $600 a few years ago on a top of the line Alpine head unit and have installed some lesser model ones in some other cars and NONE have sounded as nice as the top of the line one. There is more to electronics than the features. Quality internals make up a large part of it; There is a noticeable difference between things as small as resistors, capacitors, etc. (between quality ones and cheap ones). $.10 here and there allows the companies to make money, but the product usually suffers.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

i dislike sony products because they are cheap and sound like it, it's not just the
entry level stuff, it's all of it.

what -srs- and drknow90rs_ss say is also true, i have worked in car audio for more
than 15 years and its always been like that. they all have a short life.

i run alpine, mb quart (but not the new garbage), cdt, and the higher end rockford (p3 and shallow) subs and midrange amps.

as a point of reference against the plastic sony subs, i bought 3 rockford series1 15s (their entry level line )
in 1993 and i still use them, they are non pressed pulp paper cone with foam surrounds,
and they still sound good.
the kicker cvr's are pretty good but make some mechanical noise from the face of the cone.
i dont run any of the pdx style alpine amps because the sound quality is terrible.

Alpine addressed and fixed the noise issues they had with the initial PDX amps. The new PDX are pretty good.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I second every bad thing already mentioned about Sony car products. I had a complete setup in my wife's car a few years ago. In less than six months we went through two decks, three amps, and five subs. I finally switched all her stuff over to pioneer & Kenwood and never looked back. I have a Kenwood deck and amps in my car along with Polk speakers and a Bazooka sub and have never had any issues with any of them. Just like n1ffer, my entire home theater equipment is Sony and I love it, but I would never put Sony in any of my cars ever again. They might sound fine now, just give them some time and see how long they last.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I have had a sony Xplod GT330 in my car, along with a xplod 600 watt amp for over a year and a half. Sounds good to me! Only thing I don't like about it, is that the head unit beeps when you turn off the ignition because its supposed to remind you to take the faceplate off.. It gets annoying lol. The Xpod line is great for a beginner, or if the car is just a daily driver and you want an upgrade from stock. I will be upgrading to pioneer when I get a chance, that sony was the first car audio anything I ever installed..

Hey nothing wrong with them if thats what ya got. I myself use kenwood only. But thats me. Pioneer was a good deck a long time ago.Sony is good if you have to have tunes in your car. And for the price on a budget it's fine.

My friend has a Sony set up and it sounds like crap. Pretty bad. I have kenwood, amps, speakers, deck, subs, the only thing I have that isn't is two 4x6's that are JBL. Sounds good.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

Don't know what you all are doing to blow speakers, I have yet to blow a set except for factory speakers. And I do listen to my music fairly loud. I can't put it that loud with others in the car with me. The only thing I agree with is their head units are not very good on any budget. Also yes, these are more for lower budget, just get tunes in the car so what I say below means I feel there are decent, but there are better brands out there.

All the speakers in my car are Sony Xplods(don't remember dash, but my rears are XS-R6911.) I've had them in there for coming up on 7 years and I have never had a problem with them. They sound great, I can't turn my head unit up even close to all the way because they're too loud(and still very clear), and a single 10" Xplod Woofer powered by a 300watt amp(don't recall the name) is enough to tickle my nose hairs and have nice clean bass. I had a Clarion headunit that sounded great, but it was stolen. For a "temporary" headunit, I installed an older Panasonic that only plays regular CDs. I've tried several newer units and i'm not satisfied with how they sound in comparison to my old Panasonic. These include Sony, another Panasonic, Kenwood, JVC, and an Alpine. If I do go with another headunit it'll be one that isn't cheap. Probably another Clarion.
I have used many different brands for headunits, speakers, amps, etc in my Bird and other cars i've owned... but this setup I have now has lasted the longest, and sounds better than 95% of cars i've been in.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

Like a few people have said before me Sony offers a great cheap upgrade from stock papercone speakers, if your only using them with a stock radio you cant beat 'em. Just don't try putting even a decent amp to them.

Sony should just keep to their home audio business. I have about a $300 dresser top stereo from Sony that makes my neighbors mad . Sony kicks but inside your house but I stray away from them with decently powered and amplified car system.

sony explodeds aint the greatest around but if you put them in the right car at the right place any subs can sound good. i got 2 10s in my firebird and one of them is half blown and since i turned them facing the bumper they sound way clearer and louder then alot of my friends systems which cost well over 1000 bucks..... i paid 350 for my entire system

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I have had a Sony Xplod head unit(gt330 or similar, cant remember which) bought for 149.99, A Sony Xplode 760 watt amp got for free, and a 12inch 1200watt Sony Xplode sub (someone threw away) in a walmart box, for almost 2 years now in my Camaro, no problems whatsoever.

With the volume on 30, it will mash your brain and give you a back massage in the front seat. Its not distorted at all and the sound is crisp and clean. The volume goes to 50.....and thats with the subwoofer turned to zero on the HU.

150 for the whole system. and i still have the stock 21 year old speakers in the dash, still working.

I've had a good experience this time around, but if I had the money for it, it wouldn't be sony.

It wouldnt let me post the pic of my HU.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

Speak of the devil sony just freaking showed up on our delivery yesterday >_< we had a big falling out with them a few years ago but apparently CT's is overlooking that to ditch dual... apparently they have a mood sensing radio station thing now??? Wtf? They rely on cheap gimmicks instead of keeping up with competition, eyeah you can tell my mood but you can't handle a large power load for crap.

The mood thing doesn't make sense what if I punch my dash it'll start playing death metal? If someone is crying is it gonna put on emo music? Blah its aggravating

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I must agree with most everyone on here. Most Sony car audio is just entry level. The head units are Ok. Not great just Ok. I ran a Sony amp for two days before it started overheating and going into protect mode. You could tell every time because it started cutting out. I returned it for a full refund and went to a Kenwood Excelon series amp. Never a problem since. However I am running two 10" aluminum cone dual voice coil Sony subs and am happy with them.
Before any one wants to flame me let me also say that I know that there is better sounding and louder but I do not like my windows rattling. I have the gain control down and with the volume at 13 the bass is felt through the seats in my truck. At the time I did the system a sub box was not available for my truck to fit under the rear seat so I had to make it custom and set it up as a downfire system. The air volume is on the small side.
My head unit is an Alpine and the rest of the speakers are stock. The extra power of this extra high power deck woke up the speakers. The sound is decent but I am not an afficionado either. It could never compete in any sound-off competition. I would come in last if that high.
Others I know who have had Sony have all agreed it is a good base type of upgrade. Nothing more.
In the firebird I will put sony 6X9's in the rear only because I have them already and then plan on upgrading later if I feel it needs it. Looking at something else for the fronts but don't know what yet.

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I had good look "back in the day", with old sony amps, XM 4040, 4020, etc...

Tried buying some sony stuff after that (including home stuff) and the quality of it seemed to go down hill... breaking, doing crazy stuff... I remember once turning on my sony home receiver, the display turning red, it making a humming noise, and the volume headed from 0 to 100 all by itself... Glad I was close to stop it... I have stopped buying sony anything a long time ago...

Yamaha home receivers, no problems... a work horse... Pioneer deck... no problems...I have a set of 6.75 Pioneer 2 way's (top of he line) no problems there either....

On a similar note... I remember opening up an Alpine CD player a few years ago, and most of the chips inside were sony too.... (can't speak for other cd players....)

Re: why does everyone dislike sony xplod?

I have to laugh when I see the knock-off brand.... Xplōre!! To think there's a company out there that wants to associate their name with Sony Xplōd. LOL

Seriously, though... What's wrong with Pyle? I know they're "cheap", but has anyone really had reliability problems with them? Back in my day (late 80's) Pyle Audio was the stuff to have. They may not have raised their standards to the level of some companies today, but we never had a problem with Pyle.

You could literally pound that stuff all day long and it would take it. A friend of mine had an AMC Eagle 4x4 hatch with four 10" Pyle subs and two 200 watt Pyle amps. He always had that stereo cranked. Never blew a single sub or fried an amp.
