getting through the firewall

im looking for the best way to get my power wire through the firewall of my 87 camaro, just wondering if theres any tricks out there or if there is an existing hole that i missed. also the battery is on the passenger side and i was wondering if i should run the cable along the front then back to the firewall along the drivers side or run it along the passanger side then run it back across to the firewall that way. thanks

Re: getting through the firewall

Where are you mounting your amp? Mine is on the passenger side, in the spare tire compartment in the quarter panel. My battery is also on the passenger side. My power wire (8 AWG) runs up to the kick panel, where I drilled a hole large enough, installed a grommet and fed the wire through, then fished it up from the cowl and continued forward to the battery. The wire runs along the top of the passenger fender and under any bracing.

Re: getting through the firewall

the driverside firewall sometimes has a couple extra grommets/plugs down low under the brake booster

Re: getting through the firewall

Grommet is just a little rubber/plastic liner that goes in the hole. It keeps the jagged metal from scraping the wire and causing a short. They say that if you run your power wire with the rca cable it will cause some static or something like that. So I'd recommend you run the rca cables down the drivers side to the head unit. Then run the power cable down the passanger side and if you can't locate a hole just drill one pop a grommet in and your good to go.

I ran my amp's power wire though with a new grommet through the antenna's hole.

Re: getting through the firewall

Run power wire on same side as battery and RCA's and remote wire on oppposite. Makes more sense that way

As far as getting through the firewall i used an oversize grommet and drilled a hole big enough to fit 0gauge through and also sealed it with loctite polyurthene, Works great

Thats the right way to do it in my opinion. The antenna wire goes through the passenger side kick panel. make sure you install an in-line fuse as close to the battery as possible to prevent any fires. A lot of car fires are started this way. Good luck!
