Lost right side high tones.

'88 Firebird with factory Delco cass. system.
I noticed, after the car had been stored for some time, that it lost the high tones from the right side front and rear speakers, what might cause this?

Everything factory stock.
One day they are fine, the next high tones are gone....!

Re: Lost right side high tones.

Could be a loose solder joint in the head unit. Stock decks get really flaky with age. I once watched my room mate try 10 different Delco radios out of a stack of about 50. Not a one of them worked.

Re: Lost right side high tones.

Thanks, I will take it out and have it inspected by a professional next year.
Am I right in that the speakers are Bose, and have their own, individual amplifier...??

Re: Lost right side high tones.

The problem when losing the right channel is 3 bad capacitors on the amp board. These are notorious for going bad in the delco radios. Most places want to charge you $150-$180 for the repair.

On the side of the radio there is a purple heat sink. It is held on with four 1/4 screws and four T8 screws. Remove the heat sink and under it you will see 3 small green 1uf caps. These have gone bad. Remove and check all traces, sometimes they can leak and corrode the board. You will probably not be able to find new caps that are as small as the old ones, so when you solder the new ones in they will have to be laid on the side to allow the heat sink to fit back on the amps.

Re: Lost right side high tones.

Thanks 84TA.
As you know your way around, do you happen to know the size of the cass. player belt?
I guess it's a good practice to renew it, whenever one opens the system.
The last time it was renewed at mine was about 15 years ago....!!

Re: Lost right side high tones.

And ordered the belt kit today.
Very inexpensive, even the shippingcosts are low, all thanks to the US Dollar-Euro conversion...
Thanks again 84 TA for the link to the Fierostore...!

Somewere in the next ( winter) months, I will take the radio out, and will have a look inside, the Firebird is stored anyway, so I don't need the radio.
