4X6 Speakers
The 4x6 front speakers in our cars are still available!!!just out of curiosity I went to a GM dealer with one in my hand and he looked up the nos.on the back of the speakers and told me they are still available,I was very surprised because I see a lot of people on here are asking were can I get a set of 4X6s.Well I ordered 2 and should have them in a couple of days.I'll order 2 more when I see if these are the right ones.He assured me that they are the right ones.Their not cheap $54.40 ea. but their new and their the right ones. The part no.is 16033662.
SOB just found them on GM PARTS DIRECT for half the price.

I can understand trying to keep things stock.. but a speaker that no one can see? why?

Re: 4X6 Speakers
Because I know that the speakers are the ones that belong in there and are matched for the system and their is no cutting the wire harness just plug them in and forget about them for another 25 yrs.And I say if your going to keep the car original well the sound system is a big part of that. That's just part of keeping up with the restoration.

Re: 4X6 Speakers
$54 EACH for factory 4x6 speakers?
For starters, you don't need to hack up the factory wiring harness. You can get vehicle specific plug n play wiring adapters from Crutchfield that plug into aftermarket speakers and stock wiring harness. See them below.
Stock rear 6x9 vs aftermarket 6x9 with speaker wire adaptor

As for front speakers. I just replaced my functioning stock 4x6 speakers two weeks ago. $49 for a pair of Alpine 4x6. They come with two trim adapters (use the thicker set)

I used the speaker adaptor wire for the front as well. Easy peasy. No splicing, crimping or anything else involved. They slide on the speaker and snap into the wiring in the car.
If you're going to go to the trouble of installing car stereo stuff and it's invisible, at least go for an easy sized upgrade. Especially when the cost is the same.

Vehicle specific speaker wiring:
These are the part numbers from Crutchfield for my car (1989 Firebird). I assume they're the same for other 3rd gen years.

One of them will say GM/Toyota and the other will say GM/Jeep. One set does the front speakers. The other set does the rear speakers. They look the same, except one set has the positive/negative wires left and right, while the other set has positive/negative wires right and left. Don't get them mixed up or else your speakers will be out of phase. $10 for front, $10 for rear. Although they'll be included for free if you buy speakers from Crutchfield.
I'm personally not a fan of crimping and soldiering and running custom wiring stuff. I just want to snap stuff in and have it work. Plus this allows you to return to stock if you ever want to put the original speakers back in.

Re: 4X6 Speakers
As for those front speakers, much has been written here about some 4x6 brands fit while some 4x6 brands don't. I know the Alpines were on the list of stuff that does fit.
With the thin and thick spacers that come with the Alpine, you can use either the thin or the thick on the passenger side. But you need to use the thick one on the driver's side. (Helps clear the ducting that is in the way that only exists on the driver's side)

Re: 4X6 Speakers
wtf? 55$ for crappy stock paper cone speakers of 30. for that money you could buy a much better set of "quality" speakers that stock could never compare too.

Re: 4X6 Speakers
Sorry, but i'm with Mantaguy on this one. I'm getting 4, 4x6 replacement speakers for my ta as well. Gunna buy them from GM or classic industries. I want it all stock. I dont want to hack, or have to change the amp because i have unnecessarily powerful speakers.

You can get the original 4x6 front from gmdirect.com for 28.02 ea.If I had the part no. at the time I would have gotten them from them and not the dealer.

Hi Greek,it's legit,it belongs to a gm dealer who scooped up a lot of nos parts. Only the front speakers are available, the rear 4x6s are different they have the wire attached to them with the plug.

Thanks, hopefully GM has the rear speakers. I don't want to start drilling new holes in the kickpanel.

Re: 4X6 Speakers
I have those same 4X6 alpine speakers in my bird and I find they distort quite easily when turned at a reasonably high volume, do you think this could be because of my car deck?

Re: 4X6 Speakers
Alpine only makes one set of 4x6 speakers at this time. The 406 model number as mentioned above. I bought a brand new set of Alpine 4x6 on Ebay. Came in the box, wrapped up etc. Just like you'd get from a store. Cost me $50. I paid the $20 for the wiring adaptors from Crutchfield (for front and rear speakers)
The 6x9's are from my old car stereo from 15 years ago. They've been sitting in a box for a few years.

Re: 4X6 Speakers
Noob or what ? No drilling required. Have owned four 3rd gens and any decent aftermarket speaker will sound better and go right in place of the factory speaker. Just check the depth and be sure the aftermarket will not be too deep.

Re: 4X6 Speakers
If there's no drilling and they have adapters, I'll put higher quality 4x6's in the rears. I don't have extra money to splurge for amazing quality speakers and I don't want to change my stock amp.

Re: 4X6 Speakers
I would buy a set of fronts and use them in the rears from GM Direct.com and solder the wires from the old speakers on to the new ones, this way you can use the plugs that it came with.
