Im thinking about putting in a CB in my 91 RS and a magnetic whip right behind the t tops. Any suggestions on what brands to buy? Where are you guys mounting your radios and whips? Pics?

Remember K40's being good. Unless you were pumping some BIG wattage.
We use to run Audio King antenna's.... Dont know if they still make them.

I plan on putting mine under the vents in the center and running the cb cord under the dash so its not hanging down from the ceiling

Re: CB radios and whips
Just keep in mind if you put a magnet one on your car it will leave a ring on the paint.
alot of jeep people run the cb's still and they do come in handy more than you would think. ( I am a jeep person too) but I am running a firstick with the tuneable tip and a cobra ( 40 dollar cb ) if you tune it right you can talk to people miles away.
a good place to get cb stuff from is. " http://www.knowwhere2jeep.com/cb-radio-gps-flags.html " he is a very nice person and they know a thing or two about customer servise. I bought manythings from them over the years.

I ran a cobra 29 classic(one of the best CB's in my opinion) in my Camaro. I used a Glass mount antenna. Mounts like a rearview mirror on the outside of your hatch glass, a second piece on the inside right under it to receive the signals. A little less range, but it looked alot better. i"ve been meaning to install it in the T/A but I haven't got around to it.

Re: CB radios and whips
My dad is a retired trucker. He always has a CB, although he says that there is not as much air traffic as there used to be.
When he installs a CB in a nice car that he does not want to hack up, he makes a steel bracket out of 1 inch wide steel bar 5/16 of an inch thick. He attaches the bracket to the bumper mounts with the stock bolts, and extends it beyond the rear bumper of the car. He mounts a 108 inch whip style CB antenna on it, and it will take any wattage the radio will put out. Properly set-up you should be able to talk about 5 miles, providing there are no big hills to block the signal. Later, if dad wants to sell the car, he removes the bracket, and the car is stock again, with no damage to the body.
Some of the shorter antenna's with copper windings will work almost as well as a 108 inch, and you don't have to deal with a nine foot antenna to get tangled up in everything. Since the FCC removed the wattage limits on radios a few years back, one can purchase some very powerful transmitters right out of the box. If you have a radio from the old days, it probably is not worth the aggravation of modifying it to todays standards.

I used to run a cobra 29 LTD Classic with the Malisa board peaked freaked with side band. and re-verb I ran a good old Road King mike I used a custom antenna that mounted on the rear glass like a cell phone antenna with a 150 watt amp I could talk clean 15 miles
The radio sat between the seat and the console

Re: CB radios and whips
We use CBs in all our vehicles....I was always a Cobra woman but my husband got me hooked on Galaxy....theyre really good radios. My Galaxy DX 939 is a higher end CB but we have a 44 HP that hits pretty good....also theres a few sites online that sell linears. On my Camaro I just got it bolted to the center console on the passenger side. Oh and by the way....plenty of drivers still use them and saved me a pretty hefty ticket just 2 days ago when someone called out 2 sittin in the median. I went from 80 mph down to 55 just in time to pop over the hill and see 2 state troopers clockin.

Re: CB radios and whips
What did they remove it to? Think there would have to be some limits on the 27mhz freq's.. it was was one the dirtiest for harmonics. I remember 300 watts tearing all sorts of stuff up(tv's/stereo's), even the first ecm on cars/trucks. Was pretty dang funny. Pops had a Kw in his pick-up, would only go up hill on low, med or high keyed up..... forget about it.

Re: CB radios and whips
Many CB "purists" sneer at splitters, but they work just fine with most stock external radio antennas. The only time I've had distance problems with a splitter is when the antenna is embedded in the windshield and strangely on my 96 Impala SS.

Re: CB radios and whips
I always ran cobra's and k40 's but i put my k40 on the rear hatch between the rear spoiler and the back window. easy to remove and keep clean as not to scratch the paint. you can always use a small piece of vinyl sticker in black cut to alittle bigger than the base too keep it from scratching the paint. when i had a cb i owned my 87 sport coupe back in 89. it was black so thats where i put the antena but remember to take it off if you go through car wash or the car wash will take it off for you .

I used to run a mag-mount on a Malibu and an LTD II.
Wind liked to blow it off the roofs. Always held pretty good on the trunk lid.

Re: CB radios and whips
I run an MFJ dual band mag mount just behind the t-tops without any issues. It's pretty low profile. Not a CB antenna but for my dual band handheld HAM radio. 5 watts gets me out all over the front range in Colorado, using a repeater of course.
