You can fit 4" separates, and some have even stuffed 5 1/4" separates up there. There is always the kick panel option too.

Steven,
I originally stuffed Eclipse 6.5s in the dash, and they sounded great! I ended up taking them out because the angled tweeter on the Eclipse's very slightly bowed up one of my grilles. Didn't cause any damage, and it went right back down when I changed it.
I liked the 6.5s a lot. The key is to find a pair WITHOUT an angled tweeter, and to find some that have a mounting depth of 1 3/4 inches or less, which is hard to find (hence why I had the Eclipses). You will need to hack up the speaker brackets though, which you may not want to do. I replaced mine with a junkyard pair though for only $5 when I put my 4x6s back in.

I put 4" round kenwoods in mine. I bolted them up on one side and made brackets out of sheet metal to anchor down the other side. They sound really good, better than 4*6s would in my opinion.

I have a pair of Kicker Resolution 4's in there, along with the r25 tweeter. Sounds great.
All I did was cut a piece of sheetmetal out to fill the 4x6 hole in the bracket, welded it in place, then I drilled out the holes for the speakers.
I suppose you could use a thin piece of wood in place of the metal.

I have a set of Pyramid 3 inchers (I think) in front, rated at 100 watts. They suck!!! The guy who put those in obviously had no clue what he was doing, by choosing this lousy of speaker. Also, he mounted the speakers on some ugly-*** yellow plastic, which vibrates like mad. I'm going looking for 4x6 plates of some sort tomorrow...
