OLD DELCO REFURB OR TRASH IT?

I have a 1984 TA with the original Delco Cassette stereo. The radio itself had been working, but is now on the blink - each time I turn on the car I get a different result - sometimes the radio come on, other times their's nothing - not even a single LED indication. I've checked the harness and connections - everything is as it should be. I have totally restored this TA over the past two years, and prefer to keep the factory stereo....OR...if anyone knows of an aftermarket product that I could find that would fit into the orginal mounting in the center console w/o looling like it doesn't belong - I know I can buy a conversion kit and put a new CD, etc - but I'm wanting to keep the old look as much as possible? I remember that a few audio manufacturers did - but wouldn't know where to start. Can I still get an old radio like this refurbed

delcos have always had really junk switches, just beat on it a little to get it to light up.personally I think the Alpine CD player looks great in my '84....but,I'm not planning on bringing it to a car show anytime soon. Congrats on your restoration!

There are aftermarket radios from Pioneer, Alpine, Jensen and Audiovox that fit into the stock opening, but they still look, well...very aftermarket.

It would be too costly to have you radio fixed, so don't bother. But do save it in case you change your mind someday. The best bet is to get a good used Delco radio at the junkyard and put it in your car. Many Cadillacs have a really fancy one with extra features and more power, and it'll look pretty similar to the one you have.

GM used the same radios in several different lines, you might be able to find the same radio in a different car in the junkyard and just swap your ***** and face on to it to keep the same appearance.

I agree with the radio coming in many different GM vehicles. My father's GMC Jimmy and my buddy's S-10 have the identical AF/FM radio cassette player as mine, except my father's doesn't have the equalizer or AM Stereo (which no AM station broadcasts in where I live).

even if your not electronicly inclined you could still collect some old GM radios. all the electronic inards should be similar, switches boards ect.get some wire cutters, soldering iron, cleaning solvent mix and match until you get something that works right.
it might sound far fetched, easier than you would expect once you get your hans dirty, Im an electronics technition by trade,I wish I could help you out,but I live nowhere near tennesse

Thanks for the advice - I'm gonna try and rebuild it from some others I have laying around. I was a Depot-level electrician in the Air Force - it's time to start the gears a grindin' in my head. In the meanwhile, I went to E-bay and won an auction on the following item - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cg...item=492408672
For $ 20.50 I think I did ok...

Thanks Again!

Hey, that looks like a pretty nice radio, and a great deal too. Depending on what year car the radio came from, the plug on the rear might be different from yours. If so, adapters are available.

wow that is a good deal! thats what a scrapyard would charge for some dirty old tape eater. looks like you won't have to do much swap trouble shooting. as a former technition those connections shouldn't be very difficult to deal with, the harness is probably the same for all '82-92.I think it's time I check out E-bay!!
