Hey polecat, any idea why kickers distort

Almost everyone I know agrees with me that every kicker setup they've heard sounds like it is distorting (and I'm talking pro installs, not some newbie that built his first box). Whut'z up with that?
And how much wattage should I give my 2 12 inch Kicker Comp VRs I got.
Also, how'd you land a job at Kicker, that'd be the ****?

There are so many reason's why it could be happening. From the 14 years I've been here is because a kid thinks if 25 on the volume **** is loud, then 30 must be wayyyyy cool. Actually, he is driving the amp and speakers into distortion.More speakers blow due to distortion vs. overpowering them. If the system has the proper power(not like a Boss amp on some good 12's)and proper wiring, then proper box design, speakers and amps will last a long time. I don't know how many times I walk a car show to hear people jamming their cars way past the distortion level. And they think it sounds good, but actual about 5 notches down on the old volume **** it would sound way better.
You need to match the head unit volume to the gain on the amp, so they peak at the same time.
Your ears will be the first sign of distortion.
Also some people say their amps put out **** watts, but actually they don't. Ever seen the amp that say's it's 400 watts and new it cost $49.95? I have seen people ask me why the speakers sound bad.Uh, I loan them a better amp and they freak out.
So their is so many reasons why, but it has alot of variables.

I just fell into this job in '88. Started as a shipping flunky at $4.25 an hour, and the company had 22 employees. Now almost 14 years later, I'm still having fun.

later......

The IX702 will do ok, but not push them really hard. The IX702 is rated at 210 watts at 4 ohm mono.Be sure and 8 ohm woofers when you do, and with that power, maybe look at some 10's instead of 12's.

Polecat,,, I have a Clarion deck,, (35w 4 channel,, is that enough to power the subs?

Also how many watts would the IX702 put into each of the subs?

Sorry for sounding dumb, but what is the ohms, and why is 8 better than 4?
Thanks!

The headunit will not be enough to power the subs. That would maybe 14-20 watts to each, and that is barely enough for a set of 3.5" in my opinion. Get the IX702. The amp likes a 4 ohm mono load, so you will need 2 8 ohm woofers inorder to make this on the wiring setup. Ohm(s) on woofers all depend on how you plan on wiring up your amp, and what the amp can handle. If it could handle a 2 ohm mono load, go for 4 ohm woofers.
Did this help any? I don't mean to sound confusing.

Polecat,

Sorry, but I am now more confused then ever! Car audio is just not my thing!

I didnt mean that the Head Unit would power the subs by themselve. I was just wondering if it is good enough while using the amp!

How many watts will each sub put out w/ the IX702, also!

Thanks so much!

No problem. With that amp close to 100-120 watts each woofer.
Yes, the headunit will be fine with it.

Ok thanks alot, youve been the most helpful person!

By the way if I later plann just to upgrade the Kicker amp, to another Kicker amp,,, wouldnt those just transfer w/o any "extra needed items"?

Yes. As long as you keep with the Impulse line.If you move up to a bigger amp, like way bigger, you will need to step up on the power wire.

Good luck!
