i will tell you right now, everyone here is gonna tell you that the plates suck and don't even compare to a sealed box. you can buy a premade one like the one below that i had before. fits right in the well, and is perfect for 2 12's. cost around $100-$150. i've seen them on ebay for $70 though. get a sealed box though, don't even waist your time with a plate. not to mention you could damage your subs if they aren't designed for free air installation. oh, and don't do what i did, make sure nothing is visible from the outside, otherwise you're just asking for it to be stolen.

I had a plate set up with 2 12in fosgates and it flat rocked. I have had good experiences with the plate. I would suggest free air speakers with it.

I've explained my position on plates so many times that it makes me dizzy thinking about it. Everybody knows how I feel, so when the question gets asked again, I just give the condensed version.

Most people,(plate people) haven't really heard good bass. They might hear my one 10" bazooka and cover there ears cause "there's soooooooo much bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!" When they have a plate with two 12"s. I don't know though, so, uh, no offense to the plate people!!

I've got the plate... $40 from JC Whitney, and I dropped two Pioneer free-air subs into it. It's enough to beat out my friends systems, and get compliments left & right. Even my supplier said he hadn't heard a free-air system sound that good. So, to each their own!

I wouldn't be as extreme to say that plates suck, though. Simply put- they're not as good as real box. They are lighter, though!

You can find a hatch box for $138 from here, but don't buy the plate from them- get it from JC Whitney's.

Anyone know if they make bandpass boxes for the rear hatch area? I really like the sound of a bandpass over sealed.. If so do they come in dual 12"? also where could i look for it.. thanks

i would go with a box, WITHOUT a doubt. they sound so much better. just make sure that if you make one that you make it to the right airspace and all that crap. here is a pic of my old system with a sealed 1.0 cu.ft. airspace for one 12...

sorry though...i dont know the dimensions.

Fellas,

What is wrong with a "plate" as yall call it. It is actually called a baffle board. I am an MECP certified installer and I have an 89' Firebird with 3 MTX 12's in a baffle board or plate as you all call it. These subs are not free air subs people and they are hitting in the 140's. If you build your baffle board correctly it can seal very well. Of course not as well as an actual box but then where are you going to get your air space if you do build a box. I have built a box that fits in the well of my car for 2 12's. It took about 6 hours to do and a lot of trigonometry. After all of the painstaking work I came out with very little air space. Sorry guys but I gotta go with a baffle board.

You're hitting in the 140s with a plate? I'd believe it if I saw it. No sooner. I built a "baffle board" for my car and it fit extremely tightly, but that didn't stop the air from leaking like a seive behind the plastic panels and subsequently back into the cabin at the top of the panels. My bass output sucked, and it was very sloppy sounding. My friend's single 10" tube sounded far better and hit much harder. I hit about 110dB with 2 12s, and now with the same 2 12s in a box, I'm getting 141, which is very loud for 2 12s. I can't possibly imagine a plate providing 140 even with a dozen subs. Plus, I don't see where there is room for 3 12's on a plate. There isn't room to evenly space them across because there's only about 10" or 11" of width at the center of the plate.

Oh, and as long as we're providing quallifications, I'm an MECP certified installer as well as a certified IASCA judge and I work in car audio retail and have also installed professionally for about 5 years.

where exactly was the mic placed on this "baffle board" 140 db run? inside the box? In someone elses car? It just sounds extremely unlikely to me...

Hey guys, don't give him that hard of a time, maybe he messed up his trigonometry when he was figuring up his SPL.. Thats the only explanation I can come up with.

Maybe he sealed the well, too? Man, that would be a pain! I had enough of a problem putting little strips of Dynomax all over the back panels (where they met each other) to get rid of some vibrations... sealing the whole thing makes me cringe in back pain.

I agree w/ Jim, Plates SUCK. I have NEVER heard a system w/ plates that sounded good. Check the local car audio shops, they should be able to help you find a box that will work for your subs, and your car.
