Well Space, ported box?
Well Space, ported box?
I ave decided on getting two Cerwin Vega-Vega Series 124 12". I am now finding out that they requre a ported box with 2.5ft^3 each. I have never seen a ported box for our cars and was wondering how difficult it is to isolate each speaker in that kind of air space. Is there any concern as to where to put the port or does it not matter? I appreciate any input....thanx

you'll need to take up the entire rear of the car to get the 5 cubic feet necessary for both subs. You may want to consider just one 12, or a different brand. 5 cubic feet will require a box that uses the whole well, extends all the way to the back seat, and is about 5" to 7" up from the floor. Absolutely huge.

Jim, to obtain 5 cubic feet can't you build a bow that is 2.5 cubic feet. And the correct amount of polyfill in it, making the sub think it is a 5 cubic foot box ?

Not even close. Polyfill, at best, can help fool the sub into thinking there is an extra 10% of airspace, not an extra 100%. And trust me when I say those subs will sound horrible in the wrong sized box. Ported boxes are not nearly as forgiving to space variations as sealed boxes are.

i have the 10-4's the need like 3.5 cubic feet and i can't even get that so do what i did, make the correct sealed box for them. they won't sound as deep but i will still knock hard enough to feel it in ur chest and everywhere else. thake the Vas+driver displacement X the amount of subs u have then divide it by 3. don ask how it works all i know is thats how professoinals find out how big of a sealed box to make for subs. i can tell u now, it will need a tiny box. my 10's needed 3.5 cubic for a ported and .63 cubic for a sealed. ur will need more but w/that it will nefinately fit in ur car. then is all up to playing w/measurements to fir it how u want to.
hope i helped

hmm i think your wrong about the 104s i have one that i am currently using for a home sub, and it only needs 1.5 cu ft. and that makes alot more sense seeing as how the 12 needs 2.5.

I have one Vega 124 12" sub in my basement, and I was reading the instructions.
Basically, it says you need a 2 cubic foot ported enclosure (per speaker) for the best possible performance. It also said that 1.6 cubic feet would be acceptable for a low-power application. (There would be some port noise at high volume with the smaller enclosure.) It also says that even at low power, the 2.0 cubic feet enclosure is preferred if you have the space.
Also, if I'm remembering right, the 2.0 cubic feet was just the airspace the woofer needs. You would have to make your box slightly bigger to allow for the body of the woofer itself (.13 cubic feet I think), and the volume taken up by the port(s). So you would probably end up with something like 2.2 cubic feet per speaker.
My manager at work had the Vegas in a small sealed box, and not only did it not sound terribly great, but he seemed to be blowing woofers all the time.

i didn't say 3.5 cubic feet per sub, i need 3.5 cubic feet for my 2 subs. just clarifing. i have them in a 1.25 cubic foot sealed box and i am hitting 160 db w/about 1500 watts pushing them, and i get nice tight bass.

well i call bullsh!t. there is no way you are getting 160s from only 2 vega 104s. and 1500watts? hmm no.... there peak is 600watts RMS is 300. you would blow the cone apart with 750 each. if you blasted it anyway. you may have 1500 watts in "able Amprage" but youll blow em if you put that to em. i know ive put 600 to em and watch the surround start to rip. the only way your gettin 160db from this speaker is if the mic is in the box, or the car is a big plexiglass box

oh and to 86V6, i would reccomend this speaker if you like the name but only if you like the name. there are better speakers for the money out there. eclipse, mtx, polk, even bazooka are a better value. the sub sounds great but not for the money. if i were you i would spend the money, and save a little, for a 12" stroker. you would get accurate bass, it would hit like no other and still fit in the well. i used to have nothing but cerwin stuff in my vette, and my belief is that you are paying %75 speaker %25 name. which sucks ***

actually, the price is tha main factor here. I work at BestBuy and as such got the sub and 4 year service for a whopping $82.16 with tax. Being an employee, if I don't like the sub, i can just take a new one from the self, also I have seen a RF800a2 rated at over 920Wrms push one of these suns and it is loud. This makes the speaker only really last about 6mts under contenios use, but wit the 4 yr plan, there is really no comparison...... a comparable JL 12" would cost triple and have no garantee, thanx for the imput though

well 82 bucks with service plan is defineatly worth the sub. at that cost i would do 2 where the seat is and one in the well. but i am kind of a freak...
