Installing the UQ7 Sub Option into a non UQ7 Car

I'm down to the amp and wiring now and I've run into a problem and am unsure of where each connector goes. I've plugged the white one into the amp, I assume the two large ones on either end go in between the main harness and the radio somewhere and the square one with three contacts goes to the gain switch somewhere, I am unsure of where the smallest two connectors go. I assume the larger one connects to a pair of wires running back to the subs (which I don't have unfortunately), the smallest one with the two blue wires I have no idea.

Now onto the problem I have. My car's an '87 with the three rectangular connectors and the amps harness has the smaller '88 connector. Is there an adapter for this or will I just have to cut the amps connector off and wire the older ones in its place? I'd prefer not to cut into the harness anywhere as it's by some miracle remained uncut anywhere for almost thirty years.

Any help would be appreciated.

Without the entire setup it's going to be a major pain to get it working. It sounds like you're missing some bits, and you're dealing with components that don't match your car.

I've posted photos of a nearly complete setup a few times, they might help you figure out what goes where...

You can get the pigtails to adapt the radio harnesses in the aftermarket. You'll have to wire them together yourself, so you'll want to track down the wiring diagrams.

The blue wires run to the subs.

The main harness to the amp plugs into the back of the radio, and into the radio harness in the car. The smaller plug off the main harness goes to a smaller harness that connects behind the gauge cluster trim to the gain/power switch.

I really can't imagine why you'd bother. Almost anything in the current aftermarket would sound better.

Good luck.

I agree, unless it's original to the car it's pointless to bother with that.

Re: Installing the UQ7 Sub Option into a non UQ7 Car

Ok so I've properly adapted both ends of the harness and hooked everything up. The radio works as it should, all of the 4x6s work, it retains preset channels, etc. However when I press the switch for the subs I get nothing. The light on the switch doesn't light up and the amp doesn't power on so I'm assuming somewhere between the switch and the amp I'm not getting power.

Could be the switch itself. The info I posted above has info on how to check the switch.

Re: Installing the UQ7 Sub Option into a non UQ7 Car

The switch is good however I just noticed that the end on the amp harness for the switch has three wires and the cars end has four. They both have the white at A, red at D and purple at E but the cars harness has a pink at B. Looking at the diagram this is for the power antenna and that the amp draws power from the power antenna circuit. I assume this is so you can only run the amp when the radio is on. So my thinking here is that if I splice a contact onto a piece of wire, install the contact into the switch plug on the amp side then splice it into the power antenna line it should work.

Edit: It powered on however the gain switch light did not come on and the subs emitted a whining sound. Unless I can figure it out I'm just going to look for an '87 harness.
