difference in high performance and regular???

Just wondering if there is a big difference in the Rockford 6X9's and the high performance 6X9's. Also, what is the difference between 2 way/3way speakers, etc. Sorry no clue on this subject. Just trying to find out some info. before I go into the audio store and make an *** of myself.

High performance probably means that they have a higher power handling and better materials used to make them. The difference between a 2 way and a 3 way is the number of types of drivers. Like a midrange and a tweeter would be a two way. A woofer, midrange and a tweeter would be a 3 way. Notice I said types of drivers. My 6x9s have two tweeters but they are both the same and it is called a 3-way speaker.

this is a two way.

this is a 3 way. Notice the difference? The top has just a midrange and the bottom one has a midrange along with a tweeter.

hope this helps.

3 way car speakers are more of a gimmick than anything else. The 3rd driver is too small to have any useful midrange reproduction, and you don't need 2 tweeters. A lot of the '3rd' driver is nothing more than a hollow cone that resonates from the output of the big cone behind it. Just for show.

You should buy whatever sounds better. A lot of brands use 2 high frequency drivers on their better model and call it a '3 way'. While it's not necessarily a true 3 way, it can quite often sound better just by virtue of the other differences between that model and their less expensive one. You should choose them based on how they sound, not how many whiz-bang features they advertise.

In certain lines, depending on how the speaker is made, a 3 way can yield a slightly smoother sound. But that depends on the company as much as anything else. Many 2 ways sound better than a lot of 3 ways.

In my own experience, I started with a pair of Pioneer 3 ways, went to Infinity Kappa 2 ways, and now Boston 3 ways. I bought what sounded best at the time, and what I could afford. Its that simple

So what about 4 ways? What exactly does a 4 way include and how much of a difference does it make? Is that pioneer 4 way really worth the extra 30 bucks over the 3 way?

Jeff, listen to the Rockfords for yourself. See if you think the more expensive ones sound like they are worth the extra money.

Josh, 2 way, 3 way, 4 way or 55 way. Whatever. It's how they SOUND that matters.
