is a band pass box really that great
i was considering 2 alpine type Rs in a band pass box with a rockford fosgate bd1000 but after talking to some guys at stereo shops and a few friends they say that having a bandpass box will blow my subs if i use a bd1000 and that i should drop down to a bd500 and that it will absolutely pound. so what do you guys think should i go with bandpass and only get the 500?

The amp is 500x1 @4ohms and 1000x1@2ohms. The Alpine SWR-1240 is rated at Peak - 1000W RMS - 300W and the Alpine SWR-1240D is rated at the same but per Voice Coil. The Amp has way too much power for a bandpass install with the 1240's. If you have the 1240D's you can wire the Subs in series which will give you 8ohms per sub. Then wire the subs in parallel which will drop the ohms to 4ohms. That would keep you in a safe range. If you haven't already bought the subs then I'd go with the L7's. The L7's can handle RMS - 375W per coil. They are available in 2 and 4 ohm Voice Coils.

first, pre-made bandpass boxes are baddd. if you're gonna do bandpass, you have to do it to the specifics of the sub(s) or else it'll sound like crap. while alpine's site says the type-r's can be put in a bandpass box, i really dont think they would be at their best. another thing, there isnt really the room in our cars to fit a bandpass box for one sub, let alone 2 12s. i think everyone has caught on by now that i love the type-r's and stand be hind them 100%. put them in sealed boxes, and they hit. they can take anything ya give (under 1000w, of course) and pound. i've got my 1240d hooked up 2 ohms mono to an MTX blue thunder 750 pro (maybe around 300 watts rms...) and i now have to crawl under the car because i'm finding more and more rattles. stick with the type-r's, stick with the amp, and throw them in a sealed box. it will be more than enough bass for you and your car.
I personaly wouldn't go with a bandpass box. I think they sound like s@!#. I would go with sealed or ported. I'm running a single 12" in a custom made sealed box wif 225watts so for I have about 2 hours on it(so it isn't even broke in yet) and it thumps decently. I'd try to go with 250-300 watts total though. 225 just isn't quite enough.
good choice.. bandpass is loud but it wont hit as deep as a sealed box.. i have had both in my camaro and the sealed hits deeper then the bandpass, the band pass was much louder though.. i am doing the alpine set up soon as well, i am already decided have to wait for a few months though...

good to hear someone else is joining in on the type-r bandwagon. i'm loving mine. maybe try out one to begin with. these things can hit harder than you'd expect.

I'll agree with you that the R-series are some nice subs. I haven't heard any bad words about them. The ones I hear sounded abit boomy to me and not as tight as I'd like but still a very nice sub. Check out these R-series in this setup. That' sweet!
