CD Changer vs. a new CD player
CD Changer vs. a new CD player
WEll some of you know that my CD player skips like crazy due to the high bass levels. Well I heard that someone on another board installed a CD changer in their car & it doesn't skip at all opposed to their CD player.
Does this sound like the best thing to do or should I get a new CD player? I really don't like the idea of a CD changer b/c I would not know where to put that thing at. Any help is appreciated. Thanx

Generally the changers tend to be a bit more skip resistant, as long as they aren't near the subs. in your case your subs are firing down right into the floor of the car, so the chassis is going to be absorbing a substantial amount of energy. This will likely cause something hard-mounted to the chassis like a changer to skip. Your deck is suspended in plastic in the dash and is only receiving vibrations from the air, not from the chassis. What I'm trying to get at is that I don't think you're going to see much improvement. A good deck should be able to sustain more pressure than your ears will anyway, so unless you have an unusual situation that a new deck would fix, you're doing a number on your hearing. If you're getting those sort of obcene SPL levels, you should mount another deck in a pedestal outside the car so that you can crank it from a safe distance.

I used to have a CD changer in my 86 firebird, and it skipped so bad I had to get rid of it. Expecially in a thirdgen, every time you hit even a small bump it will skip. So I would say go with a new CD player that is heavier and would sustain more shock. But that is just my experience...
