Sound deadener

Anyone know a cheaper alternative to Dynamat? I want to insulate everywhere possible because of noise ordinances (not suppose to hear stereos over 10 ft from vehicle) police enforced . Even with windows up its hard to do that. Open to any ideas thanks

I am in the process of dynamatting my entire car with the extreem line. I have used over 100 square feet so far and have not even pulled the carpet from the front area where the 2 seats are. Note, I am actually convering all, every inch, of metal in the car. I am thinking it will take about 150 square feet to cover the entire car. This ia all done with extreem which retails at 34.50 for 4 square feet. This brings the total up to $1,293.75+tax for the mat alone. This is a lot more tan most people do and I am told this is a bit much, but you should hear the difference. I now have no road noise less than 75mph, it is great. Also, I can now play my 6x9's pushed by a Rockford 250a2 at 80% max volume without audible distortion or using a high pass filter. Previous to the mat I had to use the hpf at 80hz to play them nearly as loud. I warn u, however, the mat does not actually absorb sound. With just the two 6x9's you can hear my car from over 50ft away with the windows up and the doors shut. Dynamat merely eliminates impure noise and raises SPL levels. I only recommend it if, like me, you work at best buy. Our employee cost is less than 20% of retail. It has also taken me over 20 hours to install and I am still not finished. Sorry for the long post, but I just spent the last 6 hours installing the stuff. Do not buy it if you think it will make you car not be heard from far away. While it does dampen the sound, u will find yourself playing the music louder since it is clearer. hope this helps

Woah! No road noise till 75mph! Sweet! May be worth it just to do that because road noise is terrible in these cars.

If you want to get rid of road noise....just get the car undercoated. Costs much less than all that dynomat...and stops corrosion also.

Hi - there are certainly lower cost alternatives to the various types of Dynamat. In my GTA, I also used a material made by Cascade Audio Engineering called VB-3, which is actually more of a sound barrier, particulary for the lower frequencies such as those from road noise. I covered the entire floor pan with this, but first used a sound dampening spray, and something similar to dynamat - an investment in time for sure, but you reap the benefits in being able to hear your music much more clearly, without competing with road noise.

Here are some links to some sound deadening info, and a few pics of my car all pulled apart, showing what I did.

All I got to say is: http://www.b-quiet.com/
Price is $109 for 90^2 feet.
I vouch that it works because it's all in my car right now and my stereo is as good as it gets (almost).

Dynomat is over priced. You can find the identical item for less from other companies.

I agree above.....too expensive unless u work at best buy....therefore, get a job there. It takes one month for the employee discount to kick in. I have literally saved thousands working there(spend thousands too). Main thing is, DO YOUR OWN INSTALL!!! I cannot stress this enough. They are certified installers, and at some stores they are good. Talk to em and find out. You can tell a lot from talking with people. Eithor way.... I now have completed dynamatting my entire car, all Cerwin Vega Speakers, and Three Rockford amps....sounds good...especially for teh price I paid

You can get high temp mastic sheets from http://www.mcmaster.com These are basically the same as Dynamat and has the same specs. It costs $12.79 for a 32"x54" sheet. Do a search on sound deadening to find it. Also, there is a product called Ice Guard which is used in roofing and is sold in long rolls. Something like 90'x3'. Your car will smell bad for about 2 weeks after installing it, and it is kind of a mess, but cheaper than anything else.

Why dont you just buy it in bulk stupid? Through crutchfeld you can buy 3, 39 sq. ft. sheets of dynamat premium for $229. That turns out to be $1.96 per sq. ft. If you were to buy it 4 sq. ft. at $34.50 you are paying $8.62 per foot. If bought in bulk you would pay $294 for 150 sq. ft. Plenty for a third gen. Do your homework look around before you make that kind of investment. Sorry to ramble on and throw a bunch of numbers at you all but that is just the facts.

Still WHY use Dynamat when there are cheaper alternatives? So you can tell all your friends "Yo you gotta see this I put Dynamat throughout my car so that I can hide it with your carpet when a very similar material can be bought for $109 for 90 square feet and saved myself some cash." When you figure b-quiets price out it is less than $1.25 a square foot. So I'll tell you what why don't you send me your money and I'll send you some b-quiet for almost $2.00 a square foot. And I'll even let you tell your friends that it is really Dynamat because it is the SAME stuff.

I am a believer and a user of b-quiet. The stuff works great. I used it in my car and it's quieter than my mom's grand marq (sofa on wheels ford). I wish you guys would get off of the dynomat crap because the $140 saved is a ****ing awesome coupon. Only thing special about dynomat is it's been marketed (price so high for paying for ads and overpaid execs in an office) oh yeah, and for the logo printed on the mat. It's funny to hear people talk about dynomat, I just laugh at them sometimes, especially if they had somebody install it. It just ignorance for a brand name. I can see why you would want to get a brand name amp or head unit. It makes sence, it's complicated piece of equipment. DYNOMAT ISN'T anything complicated.
Sorry but that is my opinion on the whole thing. I still make fun of my friend and his dynomat '01 1.8T jetta and the money he spent. He didn't even get the floor or trunk done, just doors and it's already cost him twice the price of my WHOLE car being done in 2-3 layers. :-)

Nothing like resurrecting an old thread.....

the b-quiet site lists several different products. Do you recall which one you used?

Thanks,

I'm not familiar with B-Quiet's line, however if you want another alternative just look below..

How to buy "Dynomat" without the marketing:

1. Go to your local Lowe's store.

2. Go to the Roofing section.

3. Find a product called Peel and Seal.

4. Pay $12 for a 12'X6" roll of Peel and Seal.

5. Install under your carpet.

6. Smile at the look on your friends' faces as you show them all the cash you saved.
