Loud vs Clear

What does everyone think of this? Is it better to have a system that pounds like an earthquake, rattles every house on the block, and gives everyone in the car a migraine? Or would you rather have a system that isn't quite as loud, but allows you to clearly hear every sound and every frequency in the music?

My system:
Sony XR-3750 detatchable face (AM/FM cass)
Kenwood 6x9's
2 12inch Kickers, mounted on a board over the well
Alpine V-12, 4 channel bridged over the Kickers
LA sound 2 channel on the 6X9's (POS amp, but free!)
Sony 10 CD changer

I'd rather have the softer, clear one.

IMHO, I would want something that is clear enough. You can spend, (or waste) $$$ and time trying to get the perfect sound, but when you consider, your exhaust, that honda's exhuast that's next to you, the road noise, and all of the other sounds that come from driving, I think that loud takes the cake. But for my home system, sound quality rules.

I would rather have a clear and easy to ears stereo but still be able to turn it up, and **** off the granny next to me at the stop light

There's no reason not to have both. It just takes careful product selection. My system hit over 140dB and was designed around sound quality. My next system is likely to approach the 145 to 150dB level but will sound even better. My ultimate goal is sound quality, but when you buy good products, the higher SPL just sort of comes along for the ride.

these days, there isn;t any reason to compromise except money. It is perfectly possible to build an incredibly loud system that has amazing clarity. You might not be able to hit 170dB and still win the SQ competition, but the main thing is the money to do so. Any car can run all MBQuart, several 12's and have the best of bot worlds. Speakers are now advanced that the pocket book is where it hits me. My choice? I side with mike....loud. If it doesn't bounce quartes off the hood of the car next to you.....what's the point?

When I said I side with loud, you have to understand, the sound quality that I'm used to is experienced in my home. You'll never compare to that in the car, (while crusing).
If you go for loud, now a days, you'll most likely get good sound too. If you want to compete, when you dump that kind of money into your system, you will have the best of both worlds.

Check out some friends cars. Don't listen to them while sitting in the parking lot, or your driveway. Test drive the system. Then decide what you'd rather have. When you get people all around you, not only some rolling up their windows, but others singing along, and dancing with your music, then you'll be happy. "I gay-ron-T it"

Yeah, if your goal in life is to **** off everybody around you, then you'll enjoy a loud system. I tend to have more respect for others than that. When I roll to a stop light, I turn my stuff down, because nobody wants to get vibrated out of their car at a stop light. The only time I crank mine is when I pull up to somebody like you that thinks that I want to hear their music. In those cases, I'll pop in my favorite ******* tune and blast the other guy right out of his car. Every time I've done it they've gotten the point and turned it down.

I'm not trying to rant or flame, but please be considerate of others. Boomers are what give us all a bad name.

Notice how I said "other people that are singing along and dancing to what I'm playing."

If I put in some ******* crap, that's when
I'd **** people off. No one here in L.A. likes it. (Except my cousin's boyfriend, who is a cowboy. Well, Mc Donalds is as close to a cow he gets.)

I don't always bump around town, just when people ask me too, or when I want to.

I would rather be able to than not.
