Putting 5 1/4 speakers in all around?

Is it a good idea to put 5 1/4 woofers and tweeters in the 6x9 hole, and also in the front, in say kickpannels. or will it mess up my imiging

Nope, it should actually improve things quite a bit. 6.5" all the way around would be better, but 5 1/4" will still be a big improvement over the 4x6" in the dash. That's a lousy location and it's hard to get good sounding speakers in that size. The 5 1/4" will give you the option to buy some higher quality speakers, and the kick panels will be a much better location. In addition, having the same speakers front and back will sound much better than having different speakers from front to back.

Hey Jim,
what about this, this was my idea, 5.25 in front doors, tweets in left right vents,
6.5 in place of 6x9's with tweets next to it ona custom holder made of carbon Fiber,
and two 12's like eclipse aluminum or audiobahn alums.
ooh, and maybe 3's in a custom center console, around the stock tape player location, cuase eventually id like to throw in a rockford DTS Decoder, dolby digital dillyowack, that requires a center channel
Thanx,

The vent's aren't a good place for the tweets because the driver side will be substantially closer to you than the passenger side, plus the distance between the tweet and the mid is too far. I'd put the tweets right in the kicks near the mids. I'd also forget about the 3" in the center. It's a ton of work, but I'd run another 6.5" component in the center of the dash. The rear is very easy to mount the separates to. Trace the stock 6x9 onto a piece of wood, and then cut out a 6" and 2" hole. Voila. Mounting plate, and it sits out of sight behind the stock covers.

Jim, explain more on the center component speaker. Like, how to hook it up, (do you need the surround encoder?), and with or with out the tweet. My home theater system is by Onkyo, and I would love to get that "effect" of surround in my ride, but I don't want to spend $500 on it.

oh, you'll spend WAY more than $500 to get a center channel into your car. Some processors have a dedicated center channel output, which offers the same type of signal extraction that a Dolby Pro Logic setup would provide for a center channel. Just summing Left and Right isn't really sufficient. The new dolby digital deconders also provide a center channel output. In all cases, you'll need another amp and another speaker for the center, which needs to be the same as the front left and right, including the tweeter.

But, you can get 99% the same effect by properly installing a pair of speakers into the kick panels. My car gives a rock solid center image from both front seats.

Anything is possible, but I'm not doing it in my car. More drivers = more phase problems, and when you put them far away from each other, your imaging falls apart. I want a nice, tight image across the entire frequency range.
