Will putting these in parallel hurt something?

My '88 GTA has factory subwoofers, rear speakers and front speakers. The previous owner had installed his own system with an amp (which he removed) and left the speaker wiring in a real mess. He had tied the subs into the rear speakers (just pig-tailed the speaker leads together) and led this to his amp. I'm installing a radio/CD player (Alpine)just to have some music, but I can't find the stock speaker leads where he cut them. If I duplicate what he did, can I hurt something i.e. subs and speakers in parallel?

thanks!

yeah, assuming the subs are 4 ohms each and the same deal for the speakers... running them in parallel gives you a 2 ohm load, and no head unit can handle that, not even your alpine. i'd say take a 1/2 a day and run new wires, its better than having to send out your head unit.

whoops, forgot one thing... if you're talking about hooking up the FACTORY sub and speakers, I don't know what kind of load they present. sorry if this only 1/2 answers your Q then

Thanks - I do mean the factory subs. Does anyone know what load they offer? Can I just measure with a VOM and figure out what to do from there?

I always use my DVOM to tell me what Ohm load a speaker presents. Most likely they are 4 Ohms.

Yeah, I dug around under the carpets and found the stock wiring. Reconnected these and left the subs unused for now. I'll worry about them later - too cold outside now, can't wait for spring and start driving this car again.
