The 1984 Trans Am I'm restoring has the UU7 and UQ7 options. The car had an aftermarket radio when I bought it and I'm trying to put everything back to original condition. I had the radio in the picture below laying around that was removed from another 1984 TA parts car. Anyone know if this is a UU7 radio? I tried hooking it up and the clock displays for a few seconds, goes off and then does nothing. No sound. Fuse is good and dash speakers work (I removed and tested with a receiver to make sure). Guess I'll have to send out for repair. I've seen M&R Auto Electronics in MI recommended in some threads on here. Anyone have any other recommendations?
Next question is what is the gray wire connector on the left side of the radio for? I'm not seeing anything under the dash for this connector. Was it maybe for a power antenna option?
It seems all of the components for the UQ7 option are present, but I'm not sure if they work. I did remove and test all the speakers. They all work fine, but the subs need new foam.
I'm planning to use DynoDave43's thread HERE to try and restore these.
The 1984 set up used different rear subs than the 1985, and newer versions. I used to restore these systems. Not much interest in them anymore. If you want to Pm me your phone number I can call you, and tell you everything I know about them. Honestly way too much to type.
Hello, I have an 84 trans am with the same stereo option. The radio l have that came with the car is the stock Delco radio and it has the same wire sticking out of the back. My car also doesn't have a matching connector were you able to figure out what the wire is for? When I hook my radio only the display works, l have no stereo controls. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I never figured out what the gray wire was for. In the thread below I think someone mentioned this radio most likely came in a Buick and is not the correct one for a Firebird.
That 1-wire plug is not needed for most cars. It's commonly found on Corvette and many Buick radios from 84 till about 89. It's a signal wire to the HVAC controls on a limited number of vehicles.
GRAY/WHITE, Display Dim Signal: PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal to control the brightness level of the digital display on the C68 electronic heating/ventilation/air conditioning control unit. Not currently used but may be used in the future.
I'm going to include both diagrams here from the Corvette BOSE system,.. 1 shows this wire and I'm posting the other 1 just so that if someone finds these diagrams in the future they have all the related info !
Here's a couple pictures of the 1984 Pontiac UU7 radio.
( credit too https://www.fiero.nl The site had he UU7 code and radio part number listed,.. I found pics by searching google; Radio currently on E-Bay priced @ $299)
Thanks for the link, it was helpful. l think your right it probably came out of a Buick. I ended up replacing the power button on my radio, and it works!
