A buddy gave me this radio out of his 1989 Camaro RS. I didn't know if it was what actually came in the car or not, but he said all the plugs hooked right up and nothing was cut up anywhere. Is it a factory Camaro radio? Or out of something else? He said everything works, and it has an old repair tag on it from some place in Ohio...
That is the radio I would expect to be installed in an 89 Camaro ( if the 89 Camaro ever got the CD head unit ) but I have never been able to confirm that it ever actually was. The same style/configuration/type of Delco CD player in 90-92 was Yellow letter. This option sheet is from / fo the 1989 and describes the radios that were available in 89,... and no CD was shown. In 89 "base" cars got a non cassette radio & in order to get a cassette deck you had to order 'Preferred Equipment Group 2'; in order to get a EQ cassette deck the car had to be an IROC-Z with 'Preferred Equipment Group 3'. BOSE is shown as an optional radio - not available with convertible - but there is no indication of how it could be ordered / included since optional stuff was installed as part of the Prefered Equipment packages.
IF the CD player was - in fact - ever installed in the 89,...... than it might have used the same ordering process as ordering the bOSE system.
P.S. for what it's worth; I had always thought that CD player was originally used in an Oldsmobile.
That one shows this EXACT radio. Another member reached out to me and had a pic of an 89 advertisement for the Camaro cd player, and it was identical to this one with 1 exception.....it had a black power button. BUT, the ad could have also been from before production got started, etc.

From what I have see so far, the Oldsmobile had a black faceplate, grey buttons, and didn't have the AUTO DNR insignia on the faceplate.
Here's what another member sent me from an 1989 advertisement.....
And here is my radio again for a comparison...
As you can see, everything is identical, other than the power decal. Black face, black buttons, white lettering, and the AUTO DNR are all the same. It makes me wonder if the ad was maybe done before the radio was actually produced and the decal was changed? Or, my radio has a repair tag taped to the top of it....so maybe the power button has been replaced? I just don't know. But all others that I've seen advertised as coming out of another car do not have the AUTO DNR insignia
I installed this in my red, 1989 convertible last night and was super surprised that absolutely EVERYTHING works on it!! Every single button, feature, and light!!! I'm gonna run it in the car, regardless.....my factory tape deck has a scratchy right front channel, so this is a huge improvement either way. If it's not an f-body deck, it doesn't really bother me....Hell it's in a car that isn't really an IROC-Z hehe
I thought DNR (Dynamic Noise Reduction) was for use with cassettes and was a GM el cheapo ripoff of Dolby.
Why would a CD player need DNR?
I wondered about that too. Interesting that they would add that circuit to a CD player. Early days of CD players in cars, so maybe they had noise issues?
Just picked up this Delco CD player.Date code is Feb 1988.Looks like yours with the Auto Dnr label but I’ve never seen one with this cutout on top of the cd slot.BTW this one works perfectly.

Yeah that is different. I've never seen one like that, either. I noticed it also doesn't have the Delco -Loc II. The power button decal is different, too. I wonder what it was out of??
I also saw another 1989 cd player from a U1C RPO car, and it too, was identical to mine.

It is weird….What Gm vehicle would have had a cd option in early 88? Corvette,Cadillac?
I now have an Alpine in my Bird, I have the Delcoloc headunit for my 89 but I can't get it to work because my steering wheel controls do not work, I guess there is a way to unlock it using the mute button on the wheel but mine don't work. Pretty cool to find the factory CD player for yours
I know this is an older thread but that is a factory U1c radio. My 89' has that option. Just like what was mentioned above,It was not listed in the 89 brochure. Their were 2597 cd players sold in 1989 across the camaro lineup.
I picked up this one the other day….Believe it to be from an 89 camaro.Do you happen to know the part number for this radio for comparison?
I'd have to dig around to find the part number. I sold the one I had. But I can tell by looking at it that it IS a 1989 Factory Camaro radio. Matte black faceplate, black buttons with white lettering, yellow power button with black lettering, and white AUTO DNR insignia on the faceplate. That is the ONLY radio configured that way.
That was the original top. It was in perfect shape, but it was starting to come loose on the passenger side. I ended up repairing that myself and it seemed to be holding up just fine.

Those Delco radios are pretty amazing for reliability. I have an AM radio out of a late 50s Olds that still works and pulls in AM stations that nothing else will. But I never knew that GM had a CD radio until into the 90s. Pretty rare stuff.
