I think I have a shot passenger side rear speaker as I am getting an interference type noise but not all the time… They look stock and I am no audio fanatic but would like a good quality speaker if I upgrade. In the past I have used Pioneer( this car has a Pioneer CD player) in other cars and had good luck but am open to other brands but have always wanted to try Alpine.

The most important factor I want is excellent fit like factory without modification if possible. So feel free to send recommendations, thanks!

 

I put JBLs in mine from Crutchfield, bolted right in and they included adapters for wiring so I didn't have to hack anything up, sound way better than stock but like you I have an aftermarket radio so that helps also.

Yes, got those too, but i put my 6x9s further back.

 

Those look good 84 1LE, Kincer did you also replace the front dash speakers??? I was thinking of doing those while I’m at it but heard the fit of the dash ones is tight and not all fit. I do not want to hack it up to make it fit.

 

Thanks, I stuffed CV plate speakers under the dash pad. Passenger fits easy, driver is very tight, but no hacking required.

 

That is what I heard, I haven’t even looked at it yet but wanted to know if the entire dash pad has to come out or just the speaker covers to gain access?

 

Camaros dont have removeable grills like birds do, but even so I think it be easier with the pad removed.

 

Go to Crutchfield.com and enter your info and it will give you everything that fits without modifications, I've been dealing with them for years and they are always spot on with what fits and what doesn't. I didn't change my fronts but someone did at some point that's why I didn't bother.

 

Another nice thing about Crutchfield is they give you complete instructions about your specific car about how to do the install and the adapters are included for free.

 

Firebirds grilles are removeable, but don't try to pry them out from the top or you'll break them. They're secured to the underside of the dash pad by speed nuts. Even trying to remove the nuts can sometimes snap off the thin posts that the nuts are on. So remove the dash pad and don't mess with the grilles.

The driver side dash speaker fits into a tight, narrow, shallow space. So replacement speakers need to have a shallow mounting depth and small diameter magnets. Such speakers do exist, so be sure to compare images and dimensions before purchasing anything.

 

I installed some Infinity speakers in my car some years ago. Because the plate used two speaker, with the round one offset from the center, that moved the magnet location on the back side. And they had large magnets to boot. Installation on the passenger side of the dash was not an issue. But on the driver side, I had to cut a section out of the dash vent duct. Plate speakers! Thanks for the reminder, Dave. I've always thought about replacing the rear 4x6 speakers in my sub system with 4x6 plate speakers. But on the rare occasions that it crosses my mind, it's never been important enough at that moment to worry about it lol.

I recently installed a set of Pioneer 4x6 4-way speakers back there. They sound good. I'd gotten them for the front many years ago because they're a good fit, with small magnets and a shallow design. But then one of the rear 4x6 speakers, which were a no-name brand aftermarket 4-way speaker(but sounded very good), suddenly began to vibrate with the thump of the little subs, so I removed them and installed the Pioneers. Turned out, the plastic frame around the surround on one of the speakers was loose and vibrated with the thump.

I had the factory subs rebuilt many years ago, so they're still good. BTW, another thing to look at for new speakers is the surround. The factory surrounds are foam, which disintegrates over time. That's what was wrong with the subs. So when I shop for new speakers, I always look for rubber surrounds. Just something people might want to lookout for.

So one day, maybe, someday, if or when speakers ever become important enough for me to remember to worry about, IF I ever get 4x6 plates for the rear, then I'll move the Pioneers up to the front, where I'd intended to install them all along.

But no, I definitely won't be installing plate speakers up front. I don't intend to cut/modify anything. It's just not that important to me, especially when appropriately-fitting speakers are available.

To the OP and your search for rear speakers, I looked at your album, and I don't see a gain switch in your interior pic, so you apparently don't have the optional Performance Sound System with the small subs. 1988 was the last year for it. So that means you should have 6x9s in the rear, correct? I like the idea of a 4-way 6x9, like 84 1LE installed. Those, in particular, look very nice. And I'll bet the sound very good. I've never dealt with rear 6x9 speakers, though, so I don't know if there might be mounting depth issues to lookout for, but there probably are, so keep that in mind when shopping.

 

I appreciate all the info on this thread, I am trying to decide between 2 and 3 way speakers for the back. Thinking the kenwoods for the front just for the fact I won’t have to cut anything up.

 

I’ve got JBL GTO 6.5’s in my sail panels with the tweeter moved to the front kick panels. JBL GTO 4x6’s in the front. Definitely off balanced…need to bring the soundstage forward as the 6.5’s in the rear overpower the 4x6’s. But pretty well pleased with the JBLs for the price.
