flush mounting radio
flush mounting radio
yesterday i recieved the flush mount kit i ordered that is made by scosche. it is a special kit made for camaros and firebirds that will fluh mount any radio, so when i put it all in my 87 camaro te radio wont go all the way in, due toeither a metal bracket holding the sides of the console together or these plastic hump looking things coming off the console im not sure which but those look like they are in the way, ive seen the radio flush mounted before, so how can i get it to fit??
You have to take the metal bracket out. In my car, the heater ducts in the console were also in the way, but I just put pieces of 2x4 wood under the console (prying each side out a few inches from the bottom,) put the radio in, and took the wood out. It worked fine for me and the only thing I had to modify was the bracket (not really modifying either... it can go back in if I need it to.)
i spent about a hour with the blade going to a hacksaw, and a contractors glove to hold it so i would slice my fingers. I cut all the plastic under the heater controls and unused metal in the back so i could get everything to fit decently.

In the camaro all you need to do is remove the metal bar that supports the back of the factory radio. In the firebirds, you've got major surgery to do. I removed the radio console from the car to do the work in my Firebird. It allowed me to do a much neater job.

Here is the link of the one I purchased. Scosche GM1516
Thanks,
Jesse

I have not installed mine yet. I just ordered it yesterday, before I read the post, now I am excited to see what it looks like.
EDIT: I ordered my entire system yesterday. My projected install date with my buddy is Sunday, Feb 3rd. I am going out to the field(ROTC stuff) on the 2nd, and because of school I can't do it during the week. I will DEFINATELY get some pics up because my roomate has a diggy cam. If I can, I will try to get a pic of what I am going to have to cut in the back of the pod. We'll see. I am going to post the pics in this thread too.
What I bought:
Kenwood KDC - MP8017 CD/MP3 player
Kenwood KFC - 6908 6x9's
Infinity 6422 CFP 4x6's
Later,
Jesse

WOW! I just installed my stereo yesterday. The scosche installation kit IS a flush mounting kit.
It looks sweet, it's even texturized like the rest of the plastic. I don't know if the brace was already cut in my car because I did not have to cut anything, the head unit just slipped in, llllliiiiiiiiiiiiike a glove. (best Ace Ventura voice).
I have a Kenwood and I think that these are a little longer than the others, so my car might not have the brace in it. :lala:
I don't have any pics of it yet. Hopefully in the next couple of days.
Like we said before, the kit was only $5, so if you want to flush mount your stereo without making the panel yourself or spending all of your money on a custom install, then this is the way to go.

I have a '91 Camaro, use the scoshe kit that is adjustable, and am using a Clarion DRX8575z. I can almost get it flush but am sure that the heating ducts behind the HU are the limiting factor. Maybe that HU is deeper than ones being used by other people. The solutions that I've heard are to either cut out the ducts making them non-functional (not a good alternative for cold weather apps), or to carefully take a heat gun and heat the ducts until they are just barely flexable then push on them with a hunk of 2x4 until you have just enough clearance for the HU. I haven't tried this yet. Good luck.

Belker,
When you test fitted the HU into the kit when it was out of the car did it fit correctly???
If so, did you not lock the kit to the HU when you installed it? That would prevent the entire HU and kit from being screwed in.
There was some talk in here about a bar that is needed to be cut. See if there is a bar that you can cut away. If the heater ducts are the problem, I would not cut them if I were you, try to bend them if you can.
