My motorized antenna had quit working and I purchased a kit from Antenna Source to fix it. Turns out I had a damaged mast and could not make a simple fix, as the mast is not available. The only option was a universal motorized antenna - I found one and tried it but it would not install properly. So, I installed a fixed antenna.
The reason for this post - although the mast is not currently available, Antenna Source says they are working on reproducing the mast, and they asked me to put the word out - DO NOT get rid of your malfunctioning motorized antenna. If the mast does get reproduced then almost all of these antennas can be rebuilt, between the repair kit that is now available and the mast.
It’a identical to the factory third gen power antenna, only thing you have to do is 180 the mast and your set. The finial on top is also slightly different so if you want the perfect factory look switch over your old one.
The only knock on these is some guys have reported getting a bad one right from the box so just test it before installing in the fender. Mine has been great for over a year. The price is reasonable too as mine was under $90.
This power antenna is for a Jeep application but it fits the third gen Camaro and Firebird just perfect with a few very simple mods.
You need to remove the coax cable from the Crown antenna and the factory antenna.
You need to rotate the tubular housing the mast is inside of 180 degrees to match the factory antenna. It has a yoke inserted into some rubber grommets.
You will install the factory coax cable onto the Crown antenna.
You will need to cut the Grey, Green, and White wires that power the antenna between the rubber grommet pressed into the sheet metal of the car and the power antenna. You will also need to cut the same color wires on the Crown antenna so you can splice them together using butt splices with sealing gel and heat shrink tubing.
Crown antenna, as mentioned the tube can easily be rotated 180*. If you dont wanna cut the wires, the old rubber grommet pops off and the new one is identical. The harness plug on the end is also the same as the older one.
It was already mentioned but if you get the Crown unit, absolutely test the unit before installing or modifying. Just plug it into the relay under the passenger side lower dash panel before installing into the fender. I just spent the last few hours getting my old one out and before installing we tested it, you know just in case, and it sounded horrible, the antenna wouldn't go up smoothly and bound up going down. Hopefully the replacement will be ok.
Also the fender liner retainer clips are a complete pain to remove. I ended up cutting the head off each one and I ordered a new set of them from Amazon. For the style used on my 88 GTA, part # is Dorman 799-135.
