not sure exactly where to put this.. Please help!

Hey Guys.. I don't know exactly where to put this post, but I figure since car alarms are usually found in car audio stores that this would be the best area.. what is the best alarm system that I could get for my car?? I'm looking at compustar's top 2 pager alarm systems.. one is color which I really don't need and the other is standard.. waht do you all think?? is there something else I should look at instead or what?? I wanted to get the pager system because my car is going to be a couple blocks fromw here I'm living next year, so I wanted to be able to know what's happening to my car as I'm a block or 2 from it.. I figured with a half mile range the pager would be a good call.. what do you all think.. Please help me out so Ic an get an alarm installed soon...

Car: too many ...
howzit goin red?? I've always used viper alarms ... I think they are the best with the best security features but i'm not an alarm expert, so there might be something better for your needs out there. What I really wanna talk about is how uneffective alarms are these days. Even with the best alarm, thieves have gotten to the level where they can steal your car within 30 seconds ... this is even with an alarm and a starter disable. Im not exactly sure how they do it, but here in Hawaii there is a big time car stealing spree going on (over 20 cars a month). Of all these cars stolen, ALL (yes ALL) of them had alarms. I've talked with these unfortunate people on message boards and such ... its always the same story. They had a good alarm with glass breaking sensors, starter disable, and everything ... and they find their cars 3 or 4 days later missing basically everything, and a huge screwdriver gouge where the keyhole used to be. So what ar we to do??

I'll tell you what. Every car I own from now on, i'm getting the door handles shaved and going with a keyless entry system. The weak point of todays car alarms is the fact that the thieves can 'screwdriver' the door open and keep the alarm from sounding. If you dont have a keyhole for them to pop, they'll have to break glass to get into the car, which WILL sound the alarm no matter what (no way to avoid that one). Most of the time, if you got shaved handles, the thief will move on to an easier car. Another weak point of our 3rd gen cars are the fact that you can unlock the doors with a hanger by getting a chip of wood and wedgeing he glass on either door from the rear ... get the glass to move just a 1/2 inch and u can stick the hanger in the car and try to grab/push the doorlocks open. I had to do this one time when I locked my keys in the car. It was by no means fast but it was effective. So how can we protect against this?? Tint!!! hehhe. Tint it so dark that you cant see the doorlocks.

Anyway, sorry for the long story ... just thought i'd get all this off my chest. If you do decide to go with shaved keyholes/handles, then be sure to get an alarm that will interface good with the keyless entry kit. I think the best protection from thieves is:

1.shaved door handles/keyholes
2.good alarm with glass break sensors
3.really dark tint to make it hard for them to see anything

good luck!!

I have a Prestige Platinum + alarm on my car. It doesn't have the pager, so it probably isn't what you want, but it works well otherwise. A lot of the alarm system is the installation. Make sure the person doing it knows what they're doing. Also, my alarm goes off when the doors are opened because he has it wired into the plungers that turn the interior lights on when the doors are open. Another good feature to look for is one with a backup power supply so somebody just can't cut your battery power to disable the alarm. Just my $.02.

The weakest point of third gen cars is windows. You can pry the window back away from the doorjam and reach in and open the door. Thats alot easier than the srewdriver thing. Best thing is don't count on one sensor but mainly the best part of an alarm is the red led. If a theif see's that then they must decide if its a fake ir not and if the contents is worth the hassle. The window getting busted is also easy to bypass but I'm not going to get into how to break into a car 101 but just don't rely on a one sensor does all kinda thing.

The most important part of an alarm is the installation. For example, if a theif can't find the "brain" or any of the important wires then they can't very well disable it. If they can't open the hood without the alarm sounding then it's hard to cut the power. If they get the hood open and can't find the siren very quick then its hard to diasable it. There are alot of tricks to make it much harder on a theif. A good installer should employ many different tricks to make life miserable for the theif.

I think (with no proof) that many cars that are stolen that have alarms, in these cases, the alarm is triggered but very quickly disabled. Onlookers just think it was an accidental trigger and don't pay much attention. With a pager you know it wasn't an accident that you caused and can quickly run out and stop the theif before he gets away. I hope to get a pager module for my alarm. Luckly I live in an area with very low car theft.

Besides the alarm how about just manually disconnecting the starter? Get some kind of quick disconnect for it.
I've seen the bending the widow thing w/my own eyes! I couldn't believe it--how easy it was to do. I locked my keys in the car late at night(friend's shop)his helper has a skinny arm(mine is too big)so it was easier for him to do. He just pulled it back and stuck his arm in there and popped the lock--AMAZING!!
It comes down to if they want your car they're gonna take it no matter how many alarms you have-BUT, you want to make it as difficult and time consuming for them as you can--so it's either lose a stereo or lose your car!

interesting stuff.. now I'm not quite sure what I want to do.. pager sounds good, but I gotta make sure I can get the money for it.. my thought is to buy the vipers, get it installed and eventually pay the extra 200 for the pager adder you can buy.. what do you guys think?

My answer was to put in an internal battery, self contained siren. When the alarm trips the siren goes off, if it loses power the siren goes off, if you unbolt the damn thing cut the wires, throw it in a bucket of water the siren goes off, if you stick the right key in the back and turn the siren turns off. As a side affect twin sirens are one of the most irritating noises you'll ever hear.
