I have seen 300w Kenwood's on sale and they seem pretty good...but I sorta like....uhh don't know anything about stereo's, heh and I don't really know if 300w is good.
Will 2 300watters make good sound when they are amped up?
How loud?

What are the best speakers anyway?
I'm looking to spend no more than 150 bucks on em (it's not really a priority)

I've had a lot of different stuff in various cars since the early 80's. To start, 300 watts is a lot of power. You need to go listen to different kinds of speakers @ a local car audio place. My latest toy is a 92 rs. What I did was put Rockford Fosgate plates in the dash and a set of Fosgate 6*9's in the rear. I'm pushing them with a Punch 200a4. That is a 200 watt 4 channel amp. That will be loud enough but, there is no real bass. So I installed 2, 10" fosgate subs pushed by a 200a1. 200 watt 1 channel. That brought the car to life. I'm not trying to win any comps. but I'm driving this thing 200 miles round trip to work every day and wanted to enjoy the ride a little more. I guess what I need to say is, it's all relitive to what you want to do with it. Kenwood also makes good equipment but I would stay away from the lower end equipment. Check ubid.com they have great deals on car audio equipment!

A speaker's watts rating doesn't determine how loud it will be. The efficiency or sensitivity will give you an idea though...the larger the number the louder. 300 watts also sounds like a max rating for 6x9's, which means pretty much nothing. Look for RMS ratings.

Yeah it is 73watts
You may laugh, but what is RMS?

Also I listen to hard rock and metal so I don't need much bass....is it worth installing a subwoofer?

Kenwood or Pioneer make decent 6x9s for under $100. $150 could get you some R/F, Cerwin Vega, or MTX speakers which are better.
I forgot exactly what RMS stands for, but it describes the amount of CONSTANT power a speaker or amp can handle. For 6x9's you should be just as concerned with frequency range, sensitivity(db) and total harmonic distortion (THD)
IMO it doesn't matter what type of music you listen to, subs will ALWAYS compliment the 6x9's. Its just a matter of size and quantity. I'd always recommend at least one 12"

hard rock and metal DO need bass to get the most out of them. I'm not talking about boomy rap style 1 note bass, but for rock and metal, you need a sub to hear and feel the impact of the bass guitar, the kick drum, etc ...
Here is my general guideline for a decent stereo without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars:
1 - decent head unit. Look for ones you like the looks of, and have any extra gizmos you like, but until you spend atleast $350 to $400 on a cd player, you will not hear much difference between brands sound quality wise.
2 - good front speakers. This is probably the most important part of a car stereo. Look into high quality 4x6's from Boston Acoustics, Eclipse, etc ... Or, if you want to step up to the plate, a set of nice 6 1/2" components in kickpanels.
3 - a nice small amp for the front speakers, maybe 30 watts x 2 or so, is optional. for now, just play them off the cd player.
4 - a 10" sub is a must to get the full low frequency extension of any music. And a nice amp to go with it.
BTW, RMS is an electrical term for the average power being delivered at a certain level. I forget what it stands for, Real Mean something..
Peak means nothing. Peak is what something can take or deliver for a millisecond. RMS is the full power that can be delivered over a decent amount of time.

Since a speaker's signal is AC, you can think of it generally as a sine wave. Peak power is, well the peak of the wave. RMS (root mean square) is a way of calculating the average power of the wave. It's just that, the square root of the mean of the square. Just think of it as average or continuous power, the rating that matters. Some amps don't even come with max ratings, just RMS.

Ok....I saw some boston acoustics 90watt max power 40watts rms, 2 way, for only 50 bucks...only thing is it seems a bit too good to be true...I mean it's from a store so it's not stolen but it just seems to cheap to be good, am I just not knowing what I am talking about?

Gib,
In my system, I used Infinity reference series 6x9s (which i recommend as a good quality and inexpensive speaker) in the stock speaker locations, and haven't noticed any rattles since installing them two years ago. And that is in an '86. If you are worried about rattles tho, use some dynamat or other sound deadening material behind them when you install them.

What rear shelf? If you mean the space behind the rear seats, the gas tank sits about 1/2" underneath it.

First of all speakers DO NOT have watts. That "300-watt" rating is supposed to indicate how much power the speaker can handle without blowing. Furthermore, there are no rules whatsoever on how this figure is calculated...and I can't think of any 6x9 that can take 300 watts....so basically they're lying, like all manufacturers do.
If you don't beat the crap out of your speakers, you're not going to blow them no matter how many watts they're rated at.
All speakers do is turn electricity into music...just buy the ones that sound best to you.

Yes I mean the rear shelf thing...some cars have them some don't but basically the hole thats right in front of you when you open the hatch, mine has a little lockable shelf that goes over it
I've seen kits that have replacement panels but I don't think I trust them
