Kind of depends on wether or not you have your heart set on getting all brand new stuff. I put together a really nice system that only cost me about $1100 and a lot of time, but about half of it is used.

For $1000 all new...man, that's rough. OK, if I had too it would go like this:
CD Deck w/chngr cont. (Clarion or Pioneer)$200-$250
6x9's (Pioneer) $100
4x6's (Clarion or Pioneer) $125
Single 12" sub (JL-12W6) $200
2-channel amp (Clarion) $200-$300
Amp & Speaker wiring $75
That about does it. Run the mids/highs off your deck & an amp for your sub. The next upgrade could be CD changer, front component set, & 4-channel amp for your mids/highs!

How many times does an African swallow have to flap its wings to fly a mile?
Talk about your open-ended questions....sheesh.
You could seriously spend anywhere from $1 to over $100,000. You'll have to get more specific for a real answer.

lol man,
have a plan,
ask yourself some questions.
what do i want to do with this system.
is it just for some daily driving, background music,
or is it something that you want to pound the heck oughta a car next to you,
or then of course do you want to go Comp.?
Heres my Spiel: (and yes im aware some wont be happy)
4x6 PLATE this will give you some good sound and uses stock location.
6x9's no modification neccesary, plug and play, if without amp
Subs Need A box, and a bit of planning.
4x6's infinitys gotten some good feedback ive yet to deal with them, but they do have the problem of drying out and cracking, what happens is that things like sunlight and heat will destroy them and then comes winter freezin and then someone pumping the jam already on a weak speaker.
So on Plate 4x6's i dont have anything for Personal recommendation
6x9's I would Try Audiobahn. they have some speakers out that have blue cones, and the tweets and mid in the middle, i would try these. i tried their other set of 6x9s, last years model, they were great sounding, except they had a piece of plastic going over the whole thing and it would vibrate,
Subs, Again, depends on what you want, ive heard some people be all over Cerwin vega subs which to me are the biggest Crap. i can recognize them comming, all i say is crap, they are veryvery, unclean, they will hit SPL but in SQ i wouldnt want.
Aluminum Cones are Best Rated for SQ but eclipse makes some killer ones that im after, (i can get you one i think for like 250-300 plus shipping)
and then there are DVC's (dual voice coils) and SVC's (single voice coils.)
so you have many options
Amps. lol. this has to meet the needs of the subs, so these are reliant on eachother.
i hope i gave ya some better insight.

Not a very good plan for only $1000.
Less is better.
All you need is
A nice head unit
A nice pair of 4x6s up front OR a set of componets in kick panels. Not both.
A pair of 3 or 4 way 6x9's in the back
Now you can either run all those off the head or you can get an amp for them, Depends on how much money you got.
And now for subs.
Get either 1 or 2 10 or 12in subs in a box in the rear well. And a seperate amp for those. Subs will sound 100 times better in the hatch then in the back seat.
Rembember it is better to buy fewer good quality speakers the 20 Kmart speakers.
Hope this helps. Bobby

exactly as he said,
you can have three natural subs, and then you can have two eclipse aluminums which will beat out those three.
now, four sounds kool to have, and would be louder, well, not unless your looking to spend some cash. do this.
if your not to big into Fabricating just go with some nice 6x9s and dont spend less than a hundred for them.
go for plate speakers 4x6
and two subs, a good head unit, if you want to run speakers off of headunit, get a alpine 60x4 headunit. or a pioneer, kenwood, NOT SONY.
and then a good reputable amp. figure out what amp you want, or subs then we can match it.
