4x6's in the dash

I took the dash pad off and set on my way to buy some 4x6's that I read in the tech article to be the correct size, now the size was fine but the *depth* was a problem
So much of a problem I had to space it up about 3/4 of an inch, the speaker isn't sealed obviously now against the metal.
Did I get the wrong speakers or is this a problem with my car?
Can someone please help, I don't know if my dashpad will even fit on now (it's in being repaired)
Any help appreciated thanks.

Hmmm....
3/4" might be a tad too much.

I had a pair of Kenwood KFC-4675 4x6 speakers in my car and they fit perfectly! Their depth is 1 5/8".
I now have a pair of Infinity 4x6 speakers in there and they are something like 1 15/16" in depth.
They fit on the passenger side but stick up on the drivers side about a 1/4" and the dash fit fine.

Check the mounting depth on your speakers. Should be listed on the spec sheet. If they are over 2" in depth you might run into problems when you get the dash back.

If they are under 2" in depth and they're still sticking up 3/4" then you have them installed improperly.
I had to cut 3 plastic tabs that are on the dash which hold the factory speakers in place.
The plate on your new speakers might be riding ontop of these plastic tabs.

What brand speakers are they? My Boston 746 plate speakers are the deepest and largest 4x6s I've ever come across, and they dropped into my 85 IROC's dash (which should be identical to yours) without any modifications. They stuck up a tad, but were still down enough to get 2 screws in and to get the dash pad to sit properly. Don't worry about whether the speakers seal to the bottom dash. All that matters is that they seal fairly well to the dash pad.

Are both speakers sitting too high or just the drivers side? I had to cut some plactic on the d/side to get my Infinity Kappas to fit.

On the drivers side it had the most problem fitting them in
The fibreglass around the gauge cluster was blocking it
And on the passengers it was the vent pipe for the far side of the dash

Those cx 7s should fit just fine. They take up less space than the Boston 746 plates I'm using. The only difference is that the tweeter may stick up on those, so you may need to grind away some area on the bottom side of the dash pad in order for it to fit over the tweeters.
