looking for some new speakers for my 87 RX-7
so far I have two infinity perfect 10" subs

and my stock speakers suck with a 4" front and a 5.25 rear

so I was thinking of going with either focal, infinity, or boston acoustics

the focal I have heard nothihg but good about
I would be going with there 3way utopia or there polykevlar setup
is there much difference between the utopia and polykevlar?
http://www.focal-america.com/

as for the infinity I would be going with the perfect 6.1 componet system

and the boston acoustics would be there 6.5 pro 3 way setup

now if you guys have any other ideas please let me know

I voted for the Utopias, but there are several speakers that are right up thare with them. That being CDT, a/d/s/, and Oz Audio. I've never heard those Infinitys but the ones I've heard don't come close to the Focals. The Focals sound similar to the ADS speakers. The CDT are quite differant. They reproduce music how it is supposed to sound wheras the Focals and ADSs have a distinct sound to them no matter what your listening too. Really it's just a matter of opinion. If you're willing to spend 1k on speakers than listen to them and decide after LOTS of thinking.

BTW: Who woulden't want to hang out here, we're the best board on the 'net. RX-7 guys could never compete with us . RX7speed has helped many of us and I thank him for his time and help. I still don't quite understand how a wankel engine works though or what they're used in.

cause I'm a troll with almost 800 post and I hate your pathetic thirdgen cars and like to cause chaos
and come on some import boy has to show you guys that you and your V8 muscle cars are slow and my friends 99 civic DX type-R can beat you all

ok I really like domestic cars and camaro/firebirds are among my fav
I used to own a 71 camaro and I am kinda missing the car

I try to give a hand when I can, and I sit back and read a lot of post to try to learn about the cars

I am also trying to kinda start a camaro/firebird club for our area in idaho (hehe think of an import guy doing that )
and I know this is in regards to my RX-7 but this is the AUDIO setion now right

and most of you guys are real cool open minded and such so I stick around and ***** the boards. Flash84Z28 thank you for the compliment.
the rotary is used in cars ranging from sports cars like the RX-7 which is not made in the IS, damn lucky japs , to cars like the cosmo which are more of a luxury car. they have also been used in a bus, and famliy cars. one thing these cars are great for in a lux car is how smooth the motor is. b/c the motor doesn't bounce up and down they are so silky
there is a write up on the car in the tech/engine forum and in the ontario board if you want to learn more about them

The Utopia's are a nice thought, but unless you're made of money or are getting a crazy deal on them I couldn't justify the price jump from the Polykevlars.

I was considering picking up the 165K2's (same thing as the K3's but w/o the 4" speaker). Sounded like a great speaker set for a pretty decent price. But the Utopia's weren't quite in my bracket and the difference between the two sets wasn't great enough to convince me that I "needed" to put down the extra dough to get them. In the end I decided to go with Orion HCCA6's anyway, so I suppose it's a moot point. Suppose it just depends on what level you want to take your system to and how much you're willing to spend on the way.

BTW, I'll show you my pistons if you show me your wankel.......

if you got the money and know your speakers, then focals all the way. it just depends on how much money you have. utopias are some of the best, but you pay for it. kappa's are nice and all, but there are better speakers out there for less (like crystal).

oh, and no need to bash others just because they dont have a 3rd gen. cool off, its ok

Hey RX -

I am not familiar with those speakers. I am sure that they are all great. My setup is probably a little more simple. I have Alpine 4x6 in front and 6x9 in the rear. They are powered by an Alpine Flex 75x4 amp. I also have two JL 10" subs in a custom box powered by a Rockford Fosgate 360/a2 amp. My head unit is a Sony Xplod CA760X (55w x 4/5.5v). Oh yeah, I also have a pioneer 6 disc changer in the glove box.

It may not pound like 12's or 15's but my preferred music is rock and this setup thumps pretty darn good. My goal was to be able to listen to the stereo and FEEL it, even with the tops off.

GOAL!

Hey shultzy, I noticed the B&M shifter... If you put in 3, and slow down to a stop, and goto drive again, does it stay in 3rd gear or does it shift just like it was D?? How do these B&Ms work? Did you have to cut the console to put in the shifter or does it slip in nicely?

ChevyLuva3,
The shifter is a ratchet type that allows you to shift up or down one position at a time. You can slam it as hard as you want and it won't go past the next position. Imagine that you are in 1st and then you push the shifter up hard - with the B&M it will only go up to second - with the factory it will possibly slide all the way up into neutral. The same thing goes with downshifts. I believe that preventing sliding all the way up into neutral (or heaven forbid, reverse) is the only real functional value of the shifter. Beyond that though, it is fun and it looks cool.

As far as position and shifting it works the same as any other auto tranny e.g. if you have the selector in 3rd from a stop then it will shift from 1st to 2nd and then 2nd to 3rd, the farthest it will go is into 3rd. If in 2nd the farthest is 2nd, etc. The shifting will be based on where the selector is at at the current time and does not have anything to do with where it may have been.

I consider myself mechanically challenged and I had absolutely no problem with the install. As far as the console, I did have to trim a little of the plastic with a saw. You can not tell after the shifter is installed and it looks very clean. I can send more detailed pics if you need them.

In stock form, the shifts still were not 'crisp'. After I had my tranny rebuilt however, shifts were immediate up or down which only added to the fun of manually shifting my auto.

Pretty lengthy but I hope that I have answered your questions. Let me know if you need anything else.

I've heard both and the two way Focal Utopia's sound much sweeter and crisp compared to the Botons. There's a reason why the Focals cost nearly $1,000 and the 3-way Botons are about $600. Go listen to them like I said before.

Well my personal preferance would be the Boston's. I'll be honest I've never heard the Focals so I dont have any usefull input about them. I have however heard the Bostons and I think they are really good. They have exceptional midrange sound that really fills in the music. Most people forget about midrange in their system (they have good Hi's and good Bass but no Midrange) but the Bostons kick ***. In my Project Camaro (not started yet) I plan to run all Boston Pro Series Components and JL Audio Subs, all powered by Rockford Amps.

But looking at what you have now (perfect 10's), unless you can get the Bostons for cheap I would go with the Infinity's. There's something really good about usng all Infinity components, its supposedly a real good harmonic range. I've never heard an all Infinity system myself but friends have told me its really good sound quality. You could go with the Infinity Perfect 6.1's and also get some Infinity 4" compnents and im sure it would sound really good. Another question, how are you going to fit 6.5" components in the 5.25" locations? Are you going to be cutting the hole bigger? Thats gonna be alot of work because you'll need to modify the enclosure behind as well. if you're going through all that trouble you might as well cut it to fit a 7" component set. 7" components provide the very best in midrange sound from what I've heard. As far as the Focals go, unless you're going to be competing in sound comps I wouldnt spend a grand on a component set. Good Luck!!

Thanks man! It looks great btw, can't tell ya shaved/cut anything. It does look clean, nice. Thats tru tho with the shifts, when I manually shift my car (with stock shifter), it takes a second or so for it to engage, so its not that fun, doesn't feel like manual tranny. Thanks again, post more pics if ya can, it looks good!

I've never heard Focals either but I have owned a set of Boston Pro 6.5's. It's the only component set that I've ever heard were you can crank it up and the tweeter doesn't blow you out of the car. Very smooth sound even at higher volumes.

ok the prices for the speakers are around 1200 for the utopia
750 for the boton and about 700 for the polykevlar
though when I buy them I should be able to get a better deal then I listed

the focals I know blow the infinity perfect out of the water since I went and listend to them again

I was listending to them and I was thinking about the B&W home speakers and those things are SWEET
