Sub in rear storage of Z28
Question about subs. If I put subs in the rear storage compartment, under the hatch.... A. Which direction should they be angled..... and B. Will they rattle the **** out of the gas tank? and if so will that cause a problem?
Thanks

I'm an installer and had five third gens. And,of course, they all had subs in the rear cargo area. From experience,I've learned that if you place the subs at the bottom of the enclosure facing into the well of the rear cargo area, the subs will compress more air. which will in turn equal more sound. But you have to leave room for the compressed sound waves to leave the bottom of the well and enter the passenger compartment. One of the better ways to do this is to build two seperate boxes and put one on one side of the well and the other on the other side facing down. This will leave a space in the middle for the sound waves to find their way to the passenger compartment. As far as rattling the gas tank- never had any problems. You will get rattles though from your tail light assembly, license plate, and possibly the side interior panels in the cargo area.If you get creative enough, you can find a few different ways to set-up different subs.Right now, I'm working on four 12"s back there.

okay, so you are saying at the bottom of the "well" I have a box, then I have the subs in another box, and have them facing down? I guess I don't quite get what you said. Make references with front or rear of car, and how high in the well. etc. I kinda wanna be specific before I go attempt this. Thankie!

Oh yeah, and one more thing. The speak wires... how'd you hide them? Just rip everything apart and put them behind the sidepanels or what?
what he's talking about is a box that conforms to the well, but have the subs facing the botton of the car. there were pics from the old site(are the old forums still here??)

Facing down. For some reason that doesn't make sense to me, wouldn't I want them facing up or like at a 45degree angle forward? And I'm just gonna buy the subs and build the box myself, to save money. So I'd have them facing into the box, rather than out? The subs I see in boxes face out, but i've never seen em go down. Maybe I'm just not getting it here.

Don't put the subs facing into the box.I guess another way to explain this would be to picture setting a box into the storage area upside down so that the subs are facing down. But instead of one box, do two seperate boxes so the sound will come up through he middle. When I get my scanner fixed or get a new one, I'll post some pictures.Sorry I can't seem to explain this a little better.Hopefully I will get access to a scanner in a couple days so I can help you out more.

I have two 12"s in the back of my car and they sound great. I am no car audio expert, but I like them facing up so the sound reflects off the hatch and goes forward. And I have no problems rattling the gas tank, but my mirrors shake so bad i cant see crap. BTW, that is a homemade box that cost about 20$ in wood and nails, and I will cover ti as soon as I can find some brown carpet!

Pretty impressive. but don't you need like vent holes? The speak box I have *doesn't fit real well in the back* has 2 holes that go into the box, and when the subs are going, I can feel air coming from the holes. Also did you fully enclose the bottom of your homemade box?

Nails? Ward, you really didn't use nails to put yer box together did you?
ReDnEk, some speakers are designed for sealed boxes, and some are designed for ported boxes (boxes with "holes" as you said) You just gotta read the specs for the speakers you are using to determine which kind of box you need.

For me, hiding the speaker wire, REM, GND, and PW was the easiest thing.. its kind of fun too. you can hide all the PW and REM wire along the plastic piece around the door, and the back seats in my '84 velcro down.. lift them up run the wires under there, and under the carpet of the gas tank. dont drill anything there though (like GND or mount the amp there)cuz your gas tank is right there. I drilled the hole for my ground wire in the trunk well right near where i mounted the amp.
-now these boxes you say with "holes" in them.. i KNOW the subs you buy will tell you if theyre recomended for ported, or sealed. But i dont know if they produce the same sound. from what ive heard ported boxes give a louder hit and sealed enclosures sound more muffled.. someone tell me if im wrong. thats just my opinion for you. and i also think facing the box down into the trunk well does give off a better bass line, thats how mine are angled and it hits so hard that one of my C- clamps came lose and my muffler was hanging from the car. dont worry i fixed it tight now, and havent had any problems (except with the neighbors tellin me to shutUP)
hope i helped

Two 12'' MTX, JL, or other depending on pirce, subs. As for the amp. I'm looking at about 200$ or less for whatever they recommend for the subs I get.

Is this sort of what you are talking about RSpeed ?
Wouldn't that be more like (similar to,,) a bandpass ?

I think I would classify that as slot loading over anything else

You really need to consider spending at least double that much to get any sort of useful sub amp for a pair of 12s.

but DONT GET CHEAP WITH THE AMP! 200 bucks will probably not get you enough good clean power to power 1 speaker, let along 2. i had a fosgate 250a.2 and a JL 12w6, and it sounded pretty good. hit like crazy too. as for the install, i had the speaker in the well, firing towards the rear, and it hit harder than most people with 2 12s. i am now debating between firing to the rear or straight up with my new setup. anyone think one or the other is better?
