Put em in a box in the trunk for the best sound.
I use a free-air board, the bass is not as strong as a full enclosure, but I still have access to the well area underneath.

Why do you gys think that plates suck so bad? I just went to an SPL contest Sat. Aug. 25.
I have a JVC El Cameleon, an Alpine 25x4 rms, two ALpine 4x6's, two stock 6x9's, and a Rockford Punch 100 (50x2 rms) running an 8 ohm 12" MTX Thunder 3000. Yea it's a cheap sub and yea it's 8ohms because I want stability for the amp. After all it's 10 yrs old. Anyway, my point is that I hit 135.5 db. And that was my first time doing an SPL contest. I'm sure if I had actually tuned the stereo for SLP that I could have gained more. Or even if I had another sub to run parallel to make 4 ohms. And that was on a PLATE!!!!!
OK, maybe I could have gained a few db by using a box, but I can't say that my system sucks because I have a plate. After all I took third out of 13 cars, and the two that beat me had 2-12" Kicker Comps with 400+ watts running them. They scored 142.5 in a Tahoe and 138.3 in an Escort. I was the only person with only 1-12".

Sorry, but I won't believe that unless I see it. That small amp, with a single 8 ohm sub couldn't make 135dB in a regular box, nevermind a plate. My dual 12" plate couldn't muster over 120dB, and the same system with a box got over 130dB. I had close to a 15dB jump, which is an ENORMOUS boost.

Hrmm, seeing as how I was only able to muster 131db from a single 12" IDQ with 300+ feeding it, I guess I should dump it all for a single t3000 and 100watts on a plate (Arrow or Dixie, your choice
)
Granted it wasn't in an f-body, but still...
Sounds to me like someone didn't have the RTA setup properly or the mic placement not standard.

In regards to the plate vs. Box...Even if one can get pure spl out of a baffle board set up, it will NOT sound as good as if it had a box. Lets face it well all want that deep sound that only a sealed box can give you. It will take more power to drive it in a good sealed box, but it will sound soooo much better!!! and like others I wont believe it till I see it and hear it!

September 28th, 2001 at 1:30 post meridian. Bradley, IL there is another SLP contest. I'll be there and I will gladly show anyone the results. Any directions needed will be given as requested.
I have the slip which I was issued. If you like I can scan it, but then I would just be called a LIAR. If you would like me to post it, tell me how to on this website and I will do it, no problema.
As far as mic placement, is the windshield the proper place? That's where it was put in everyone's car/truck/van. And I don't know what RTA is. What is it? As I said, this was my cherry popper. That's a new term to me.
And as far as deep sound, my system has plenty. I will gladly let anyone hear it. But don't think that I'm going to go to you. You come to me if you feel the need.
FYI, I am not a teenager who lies just to be entertaining. ANYONE who feels the need to address me as so I will gladly supply my full address, along with any bandages needed thereafter.
BTW Jim, yes we all know that Bush Sucks. Why do you need a flag to state the obvious?
85transamtpi, your in IL. Why don't you attend this event. I will even reimburse your fuel expense, as well as supply a few cold ones.
Good night, and good tunes,
AJ

ya?
LOL, That was a great Response to jim's Flagging,
some other dork woulda turned this into a flame war, LOL, BS.
Hey, not like Gore would have been better.....
the only way i can imagine a plate working is if its bolted down, then the subs held tight, thus creating a sealed box. then i think its possible, but i hope those subs are running well, becuase then you have to consider the whole two subs, divider issue,
etc etc....
LoL... bs.....

"Honda's FOR ME TO POOP ON!" -Triumph... hrmm, AJ is taking this a little personal...
The mic should be (someone correct me if I'm wrong, it's been about 2 years since I judged RTA and don't have a rule book handy) 4" off the dash and 6" from the passangers side a-piller, and the mic should be a high spl mic rather than the SQ mic that is used for RTA scoring.
Lesson 1: SPL = Sound Preassue Level
Lesson 2: RTA = Real Time Analyzer which is used to measure both 30 band freq response in 1/3 octive steps and measure SPL in db.
If they are using an Audio Control RTA, they need to be sure that they have the gain set accurately and calibrated with a pink noise track prior to the competition and that it is kept the same for all competitors...if they are using LinearX PCRTA, it should be fairly straight forward.
Remember, low bass does not necessarily mean high spl readings...some of the highest readings came from systems playing up over 90+ hz which is high on the sub-bass side of things...
Let us know how it ends up and if you get those high readings again, let me know what shop is sponsoring it and I'll be glad to call them and find out when the last time they factory recalibrated their mic was (willing to bet never as it is quite pricey)...it only takes one mic drop to shift everything one way or another.
Peace.

Not taking anything personally. About 99% of crap on here that I say like that is just me kidding around. Hence the smiles.
Look familiar?
Your speaking WAY over my head now about the SPL equipment. The place is England Dan's Car Audio. 815-937-5599. Ask for Gary (owner) or Rob (installer). They can tell you all about that stuff. And I'm sure they both can tell you about my system, cause they hate MTX. They're a Kicker/RF/Kenwood/Clarion dealer. They will remember my system. I know because they were wondering how in hades I did that. My system was louder than a guy that had a 18" RF in a box in his 3rd Gen. I had them scratching their heads.
I suppose that's my goal. To keep everyone guessing.
It's really not what I do, but how I do it (which I won't tell). There are more than 101 ways to skin a cat!
I can tell you that the measurements on the windshield location of the mic are right. They measured it out on every car. I always thought that it was done from the center of the windshield. I thought they were doing it wrong but I guess I was wrong.
Learn something new everyday.

Honestly I've spent the last 24 hours in the hospial with my wife. We are within 1-2 weeks of having our first baby, so I completely forgot about this thread and may not have time in the near future.
Drop me an e-mail with your next db score and the info for the shop and when/if I get a chance I'll be happy to call...it just may be a little while before I get to it. gndprx@bellsouth.net
Was wanting to see if you scored that high again since you said they had another show coming up. I'd rather have 2 similar numbers to either show a fluke mesurement the first time or a possible recuring problem with their meter.
Please remember, I'm not doubting that your setup sounds good, just that those readings are very unrealastic for anything I've seen in the 6 or 7 years that I've been around the competition circuit with just that type of setup.

Well congrats on the newbie!!!!!
I will be glad to show the results of the next show. I myself would like to know if they are accurate. I can honestly say that they are probably gonna be about the same. My friend scored within .5 db of his last score (he's run twice now) and all we did was increase the power wire from 10 to 8 gauge and the speaker wire from 16 to 12. He went from a 133.8 to a 134.2.
I will keep you informed, and again, CONGRATS!!!!! I hope your wife is doing well. Tell her to PUSH!!!! And wear steel gloves
