Help me pick some speakers

I don't know much about car audio so bare with me. What I have now is a Alpine cd player 35x4, stock 4x6's and Kenwood 2-way 6x9's that have a 110 watt rating. I know new 4x6's would be beneficial but should I upgrade the 6x9's they came with my car when I bought it almost 3 yrs. ago.
So if you guys could give me some ideas of brands and features to look for that would be appreciated. Just to let you know my goal here is not to have an extremely loud expensive stereo just something that sounds better than what I have. I listen to mostly hip-hop music. I know all of you will say to get subs, but I'm not looking to bump my music for everyone. Give me an idea on how much I will have to spend as well.

Upgrade those 6*9s along with the 4*6s from the same company. :hail:MBQ and Boston seem to be popular speakers.

I would like to spend around $200 or less for both sets of speakers. Any specific suggestions. What dB and RMS and peak wattage numbers should I be looking for?

some kenwoods happen to be very good, are you sure there's anything wrong with the 6x9"s you already have? eclipes 4x6"s is what my friend put in his blazer, normally I would say dash speakers are worthless, but i thought those sounded alright, they were $100/pair. since you have an alpine,I think your one step ahead of the game even if it's a lowerend model from years ago. does it have BBE,4v pre outs?

Junkyarddog,
In the owners manual it says the pre-out is 500mV/10k ohms. I didn't see anything about BBE, what is that?

I think BBE is Alpines name for their bass enhancment feture or loudness.

Go listen to some speakers. The only way that you are going to be able to tell which speakers are best for you is by testing differant ones in your price range. Zersorer mentioned MBQuart and Boston, I love the MBQ's but when I listen to the Bostons it seems like they are missing something in the sound...they're just not my style and if I would have never listened to them I might be recommending them now.

Good luck,
Matt

I've spent exactly $200 for all of my speakers. $100 for the back,$60 for the front and $40 for fiberglass and some capitors to block some bass. and they sound REALLY good. for $200 :-) I was going to get some good 4x6's but when I saw $80 for a decent set of those or $60 for some 5 1/4" I went that way and made my own kickpanels. you can check em out here http://www.geocities.com/hiperf2002/Kickpics.html I repainted em flat black and that as helped the looks a lot!

I also forgot to say taht the kick panels made a HUGE difference. just to see I just laid my old 4x6's were the kicks are and it seemed to bring them to life, just because of the better imaging.
