How do I know when/if the secondaries are opening properly?

If they're working right, you won't feel them. If they open to early, it'll bog. If they open late, it'll surge. Just right, and it'll just pull smooth.

What do you mean surge? sorry..

I know my '60 times are horrible with HARDLY any wheel spin, maybe a chirp or 2.

And the car hesitates off the line.

If it is the secondaries fault, how do I fix that?

His sig says "Edelbrock Headers&600cfm carb", so no, he doesn't have a q-jet.

Sounds like you need to work on your q-jet, not replace it.
