What have some of you down to insulate your electric fuel pump? I have added a Carter electric fuel pump back by the fuel tank to help with dry starts. The problem is when I am idling you can here the thing running. It gets annoying. I have put 1/4 inch rubber between the mount and the car. But that doesn't seem to make much difference. I have mounted it to the under side of the unit body behind the rear seat and in front of the rear axle. Any suggestions on how to quiet it down would be great. Is there a "box" you can put around it?

I bought one of those square style exaust hangers and bolted it to that. The kind where a tounge welded to the exaust slips into it.

 

Unfortunately the "best and easiest" place to mount a electric pump under a thirdgen is a natural megaphone which amplifies any noise the pump makes.
Mounting it on a rubber strap muffler hanger like advised above will help a lot. Wrapping it in some sort of sound absorbent material will help too.

Or just get a louder stereo

 

RadioShack sells plastic project boxes that you can modify to fit around the pump. Something like that filled with packing foam may help.
There is also sound-deadener sold at car-stereo shops that can be wrapped around the pump.

 

before you start covering or packing stuff around the pump, keep in mind most elec motors are air cooled and need air flowing around them to keep from overheating.

 

if its really that loud, i would mount it on rubber hangers to absorb the vibs thru the metal, and then not on the pump, but on the panels between the pump and you, id apply some dynomat or equiv....

 

You guys got it all wrong... You don't need to create a headache by making boxes or wraping your pump in sound detening equipment. You just have to get louder exhaust. I think since pump gets hot, it would be safer to keep it aircool. Plus what if it would start leaking and saturating foam with gas?

 

I use that Carter pump. Yes, it's loud even if you use the rubber isolators on the bracket they supply. I just live with it that way.

For future reference- the Holley Red pump (7 PSI and a little more flow than the Carter) is much quieter. I am using this pump in all my current installations now.
