problems still
im having trouble with the choke on my stock 4bbl. It was supposadly fixed, it ran good for a bit, now it sux again. I think the choke is busted or something in the area. My car is idling way too low and starts backfiring then stalls. Can i get a new choke put on it?
Its an electric choke and ive tested the wire thats connected to it and there is power, i dunno its annoying me

Are you only having these problems when the engine is cold?
If you have "issues" when it is fully warm, it may still be your choke - as in stuck half on. Otherwise, you need to look elsewhere.

it does it regardless of engine temp, so im at a loss
sometimes i have to use a screwdriver to hold the choke plate open when i try to start it, otherwise id kill the battery tryin to start it normally

Does the choke move at all when it warms up?
Having to hold the choke open to start it doesn't sound like a choke problem. The engine should start with the choke fully closed, but should be opened slightly immediately after it starts by the vacuum pull-off. It should then slowly open to full as the engine warms up.

what would it be if the choke doesnt seem like the problem? Could it be the distributor? or something in the starting system?

k i went out and started it up, didnt need the screwdriver, anyhow its really cold out and she started fine. Once started, i had to keep my foot on the pedal coz it was idling really low around 500 RPM and was spewin out black smoke and stalling. When it finally warmed up it was runnin around 800 RPM and sounded ok except for the car was shaking badly.

since i dont have the stock air cleaner, i plugged a vacuum line that ran to it, im not sure what its called but could that be causing problems? I believe that the line connected to a small switch in the air cleaner assembly

the line was the line that went to the air temp sensor in the air clener, i plugged it so does that matter coz i dont use the thermac anymore?

Im really starting to get mad, its like its taunting me. My car runs crap until it warms up then seens to run ok, not great but good. When i first start it, i get the backfiring and stalling, i have to really give it some gas to keep it from stalling which means i have to keep it up in the 3000 RPM range even then it loses power and stalls. When i start it, its at 500 RPM i hit the gas and it feels like nothing, then a few seconds later "pop", stall, * me angry*. I swear its driving me nuts!
My dad said that maybe the carb needs to be adjusted for the headers on the car, it was never adjusted after i put the headers on, maybe thats causing the problems. I checked the vacuum lines and havent found a leak so im lost.
