when buying a carb

do you have to get one that has all of the vacuum ports to work on your car, or can you tap into ofther lines in case the carb doresnt have the port? Basically Im asking does it matter what carb you buy or will any do, as long as it fits your manifold?

You mean the ports for emissions purposes? Generally anyone putting an aftermarket carb on isn't terribly concerned with preserving the emissions equipment.

unless your province/state rquires them, which mine does. But in Ontario, Canada, we have to have e tests done on cars 20 years or newer, I have an 85, I have to get the e test once and never again, I guess I'll just wait till I get it done then buy a carb, but I want one that at least has a pcv port and egr, or is the egr that important?

Yes, it is important for both performance and emissions control.

It lowers combustion temperatures in order to reduce emissions from the car, and, as an added benefit allows the timing to advance for better gas milage and performance (or so I've read). Blocking it off or removing it will raise combustion temperatures leading to spark retard which will hurt milage and performance.

Not going to have spark retard with a non-CC carb.

EGR and additional timing advance are not a chicken-and-egg thing. The latter is there because of the former. If you aren't tuning for emissions, you don't benefit having EGR.

My questions are: 1) What is your intended use for the vehicle? 2) What all have you done to it so far? 3) What carb do you have now?

My gut feeling is after getting answers to those questions the advice will be, "Tune what you have and spend your money where it will make a difference."

Forget the gut feel.

I will be using my car on the street for now. I just want it to be more powerful and tricked out so to speak, a sleeper until you look under the hood lol.

I have headers on it, a/c delete, open element air cleaner, a cam from a 350 thats about it for now. Im just putting on the stock intake and carb for now till i get everything sorted out as to what mods i will do later.

Ah, my mistake.

Sorry for the misinformation.
